Saw most except for Joel Robert and John DeSoto. Those were the days when the Euros were your heros.

Lackey , Decoster and Mikkola in GP's

Met Robert at a race in Belgium a few years ago.

Those guys earned their money, travelling in shit vans, sleeping at the tracks, on rubbish roads.

But earn money they did, which is why they went to the US as well.

Everybody but Joel. I did get to met him when he received the Edison Dye Award at Glen Helen 15 years ago or so. The only autographs I have kept and cherish are signed photos of Roberts, Halman, DeCoster and Lackey. They were my heros. Halman and Roberts got me into this mx thing then when I started racing in 1972 it was DeCoster and Lackey.

Weinert, Pomeroy, Karsmakers, Semics, in 1973, at Snyder Park in Indiana.
I was an ignorant 11 year old who thought every Husky was Mikkola, who of course wasn’t there.

All of them. Robert, Desoto and Ake when I was around 13 years old. The others I saw for several years anytime they came into town for Saddleback/Carlsbad

Yep, all of them. Met most of them as well. I still remember Marty asking Tommy Croft what happened to his face...did he catch it in a door or did someone give him a massage with a bag of nickels.Grinning

I saw DeCoster, Marty Smith and Brad Lackey at the 1978 Trans-Am in St. Louis.

How many of you saw Bob Hannah race a 125? He's probably the only rider without a backache after the Kiethsburg 125 national in 1977.

First race I ever went to was the 1980 San Diego SX, so on Lenny’s list, Smith and Johnson (if you meant RJ) are the only two I got to see in person. Growing up in SD, I’m really bummed I never got to go to a USGP or Superbikers race at Carlsbad, but for some reason, it always seemed so much further away than it actually was.

Trans-AMA’s at Lake Sugartree and Road Atlanta in the mid to late ‘70s. What a great time to be a teenager watching your heroes show you what this sport is all about!

Sully, I'm thinking he meant Ake Jonnson, but seeing another icon in the sport, RJ race, is also something very special.

Good point, forgot all about Ake. Never saw him or any of the badass Europeans of the day race.

Saw some pretty good races at Whitney.
I think the first time I went was 75?
Decoster Weinert, etc.
Was there every year until they turned it into a game ranch.
I also demolished 2 125s trying to race CC there.
Finished 4th once.

I was there the day Hannah was pissed and he climbed the hill on his motobike.
That was insane. Comes off the track, wheelies across the field, and hauls ass up a 3 tierd virtually straight up climb.
I think it was tiddler too.

Nicking futz!

Yup!

The Trans AM/AMA races and the Golden State Series were the absolute BEST for seeing everyone from all the different series's and countries race against each-other.

Seeing all the great classics like Bultaco, Maico, CZ...etc...was also a sight to see.

Len-man, great thread. Hope you're doing well.

Back in the late 70s and the 80s the USGP at Carlsbad saw most of the greats from that era.
