Missing live Supercross, typically head for Toronto mid season, but this year we will try Detroit. Those of you who have been, any hotel suggestions? Would love walking/public transportation distance from the event. Thanks for any help!

GreekTown. The parking garage is a short 10 minute walk to Ford Field, and the People mover goes through the casino/parking structure, so you can literally get anywhere from your spot!!!

Last year I stayed near Cobo, and it kinda sucked. we parked at Greektown and then at the end of the race, got our car and drove to the Cobo area....... just do yourself a favor and stay right at GreekTown.

It would probably be cheaper to just buy a house there. Then you'd have it for next year.

Buy a house in Detroit? What is this witchcraft you speak of?

I agree w/ MxKing809, stay in the Greektown Casino/Hotel.

My secondary suggestions would be the Westin Book Cadillac, the Hilton Garden Inn, or the Holiday Inn Express.

You won't be able to walk to MGM if you stay there. Like others said Greektown is close. Anywhere near the ren cen you could walk to. And take it from me who works downtown everyday and have been held up at gun point. Detroit is still bad. Not saying don't come and have fun just make sure you know where your going. Just saying

Thanks for that info! I figured walking around Toronto at night might be a bit different that Detroit at night.

Toronto: homeless guy asks for money

Detroit: Homeless guy is playing 5-gallon pail drums for your entertainment on your way to the event, then robs you after the event lol

msp138, are you familiar with the Regency hotel? It's 1.6 miles from the stadium and it's only $70 for the night.
I'm looking for something affordable but I want to be safe. We're just spectators and we'll have a car. Thanks.

Edit: I just noticed this is an old thread, but hopefully someone will have some info.

Downtown Detroit isn't even that bad. Much improved even over a short 5 years. I've stayed at the courtyard Marriott across from the Detroit river front and GM renaissance building. Nice, safe, and affordable. People mover also goes right to greektown. Detroit gets such a bad wrap from the media it's stupid...I mean if you want worse go to ST Louis or Chicago where the crime/murder rate is way higher.

I'm not familiar with that hotel but for $70 a night in downtown Detroit I'd say it's not your best bet. Like others have said Greektown is a good place but pricey. If your out of town and have a car maybe try further away from downtown to get a better rate like in Sterling Heights area. To stay downtown in a decent hotel it's around $120 and up unless you get a discount some how . Look around the Renaissance Center area. Further than Greektown but not too bad of a walk. Like I said just know where you are going. Some say that Detroit isn't that bad,but I work in a hospital right in Detroit and it is. Anyone that says it isn't hasn't ventured much from the "safe" areas of Downtown. Just know where you're going and you'll be just fine.

I stay in the entertainment areas. No other reason for me to go there and walk through the ghetto...we have enough of that in Toledo.

they have 2 restaraunts, shopping center, food court
and great view of the river-side.

You could cross the border to Windsor. More bang for your buck with hotels, casino and full nudity hoochie bars . Real beer and no guns eh!

Don't listen to MSP138, he is a hillbilly that is scared of urban environments (jk, he is one of my best friends)

This is the preferred area to stay in and the safest. If you cant find anything here, it is best to head to the suburbs. There is some new hotels in Troy as well and they are just 20 minutes up I-75.

Just like any downtown area, be smart.

Yesterday, spent the entire day with my kids in downtown Detroit for the auto show. Zero issues. Felt safe the entire time. No different than any other large city. Just stick to the nicer areas and all is well. Lots of great restaurants in Greektown.
