2001. Riding a freight train of momentum after earning a low triple-digit number in the hotly contested District 14 C-class, a 16 year old me was offered a ridiculous deal worth north of 9 percent off of parts at the local powerhouse Yamaha dealership if I was willing to spring for a new bike. Sadly, I walked away and my once promising Mx superstar aspirations were never attained. Now I’m left to wonder what could have been if only I would’ve had the proper guidance and tutelage of the portly scented candle enthusiast they had working the parts counter. Alas...
This is my favorite.

Brad Lackey winning '82 500 championship and losing his ride?
Or Swink and whoever he could have gone to instead of Suzuki in the 250 class, which tanked his career.

He should’ve taken that deal, no salary but heavy bonus on a good bike. Instead he went for the money on a junk bike and lasted 3 races.
Talk about a career full of weird decisions. Quite the enigma
His agent at that time didn't recommended the best things, "No Salary but heavy bonuses" that made the agent jitter. He went for the big bucks at the Kawi deal too, but ended up with nothing for CP. Same with Yamaha deal. He could sign with a crew he knew (old PC mechanic working their) at VMS but because MotoConcepts payed more his agent said: Sign at MotoConcepts its the same bike like the VMS you tested... But that was not the case.

Funny thing about that deal was, the only thing that kept it from happening was Chad didn’t want to wear TLD gear.

Starts and funds his own team instead, and basically pays for that exact same bike

Somebody may have mentioned it already but I'd say McGrath not signing with Honda very late to ride Suzuki was very surprising. He probably would've won the title on the Honda even if he didn't like it. No way it was worse for him than that Suzuki at that time and he still finished second by 15 points.

Here’s a little secret some might know.

The last part of the 08 outdoor season, James stopped riding a Kawasaki during the week and was staying near Bakersfield supercross testing with L&M on a Yamaha at a secret track.

Looking back, that is so gnarly. Imagine Eli being unhappy with kawi and riding a different bike during the week. Wild.
He liked the Kawasaki, he just wanted a head start on testing the Yamaha.

2012 after he crashed at Houston, him and Big James had a blow out in the rig with Coy Gibbs and a week later he was signed and testing the Suzuki. They started talking to Suzuki a month before the deal was done because he hated that Yamaha.

O’mara made him test and race with Dungeys setup and he owned it for 5 motos before he crashed. Came back told everyone he wanted his own setup, Johnny quit and he went down hill. Johnny was the only one that would stand up to him and when he wouldn’t listen, he quit.

He never looked more normal on a bike than those 5 motos either. Bike never did anything funky, just riding 2 seconds in front of Dungey. Was almost boring haha.

Really? Strange..
Maybe he was in talks with Shift already and the whole 'custom gear' thing was more attractive.

Good choice IMO. He’s been with the fox family since 2011 and has probably made a ton of money from them that’s helped him to keep racing for the last 9-10 years instead of doing the TLD deal and only racing a couple more years.

Yeah money wise then and now it's hard to argue it probably worked out.

I'm sure Shift re-launching and being the face would have had a nice number attached, and from everything Ping has ever said about the early TLD days, the budgets were tight.

Since? I'd guess it's been the substantive part of Reedy's income.

Yeah he mentioned that in Racer X's longform on the twotwo team. Wonder if he regrets it? Probably not.

Its a shame how short lived Townley’s US career was, amazing rider for sure and would have a 250 outdoor Championship on his mantle if a guy named Ryan Villopoto wasn’t racing. Was he supposed to be riding for two two on Honda’s or Kawi’s? What year was that? I know he almost won a moto at RedBud on the TLD Honda in 2010. Did he do anymore US races after that?
There was a race in 2010 on the Honda in the US, where Townley hit a few bumps on full throttle, everything came off the bike apart from his right hand - still pinned wide open, for about 20 metres, and he saved it. Was a fan before that time, and definitely was after seeing that!

Does anyone know where it was actually supposed to be? Best info I could find was at a new unfinished track five miles away from the original Competition Park which had already closed.

It wasn’t unfinished. We rode there twice. It was down the street from the Indian Casino, basically in the sand wash. Track was a SHITHOLE and it would’ve been a complete failure.
There was a sand drags drag strip 1/4 mile down the street.

This is right behind Soboba Casino, google earth screen capture from 2006. Is this where it was supposed to be? Looks like there's a concrete start pad that was poured and never used.

I think the MXA article I read meant it was unfinished when the FIM or whoever came to inspect it. Was it completely flat like the other Comp Park?

Jean Michele Bayle nearly came out of retirement in 2000 for a US comeback with Suzuki.

DeCoster courted him, and it could have happened, but Bayle crashed and had another head injury once he started training again.

Though stinky at times, the other dirt was much better when prepped. It could be greasy like Elsinore when they just got lazy on prep and just thew water on it in the morning though.

Oh yeah... when he would disc it deep and water the night before Golden State or GFI races, the ruts were “all time” !
The old track was one of my sons favorites, we raced there a lot !

Crappy dirt or not it's always a bummer to see a track close down. It's too bad that Indian was killed at the new track, seemed like that was the nail in the coffin for that facility. Right after I posted all of this yesterday I found another thread where all of this was already discussed and someone posted the exact same screen shot I did, haha. If you go on street view the entrance with no fear and FMF logos is still there, eerie. I never rode either track but my dad rode the original one in the 90's and has pictures.

Can somebody learn me about the deal McGrath had 7-8 years back to be a team owner? I remember it being hyped up, riders were hired, and it fizzled out. Was McGrath calling the shots, or was his name just being used to create some bait for the sponsors? I believe Andrew Short was signed to a contract.

Garden tool flaming KTM team in 2000.

A.M. Leonard with Terlecki and Oehlof were a one season satellite team that was supposed to switch to Suzuki in 2001 to be the official Suzuki 125cc team. They even told KTM to kick rocks. In October of 2000 Suzuki bailed during negotiations, left the team high and dry, and just like that another satellite team evaporated into nothingness.

I had a team poster from Millville with Oehlof's signature.
Sorry misread

Yaa it definitely sucks. If he didn’t get hurt in ‘06 when he first came over here he very well could’ve won that outdoor title. He won the ‘04 world title and won a few races and got 2nd or 3rd overall in the 450 class on a KTM 450. He would’ve been a title favorite for ‘06 IMO. But he was supposed to come back over and ride for Reed in 2012 when Reed got hurt pretty bad in supercross casing RV. I don’t think he did anymore races in the U.S but he did win a MXGP race on factory Suzuki racing for Everts in 2014 I believe.
