Oh, $700 doesn't get you a bike off the showroom? Shocking.

Could probably be bought for $500.00 and turned into a great bike for another thousand dollars and some decent mechanical skills.

There was a 2000 RM250 on Facebook the other day for $500 that I wanted to pick up. If it was a 125 I more than likely would have since I already have a 250. Either way I have enough projects going on that I don't need another bike.

If I can remember right, I think the magazines claimed they broke easier, so maybe a 1 or 2 year run. I completely forget about them and didn't notice until you mentioned it.

Rule number One ... buy new if you don't have money....
Rule number Two... A frame has a certain lifespan 10 to 1 this frame is not straight anymore...
So you get a refreshed bike ( for somewhere around 4k) while Yamaha selling brand new yz125 for 5/6k with a straight frame!

Don’ t shoot the messenger... if you can’t affort 5k for a new bike find a new hobby.

So your saying you started on brand new bikes and never once bought a used one.? Cool. And every single used bike frame is stretched because anyone who ever rode it rode it hard enough to do so? Interesting thoughts. I'm sure your so hard on bike frames that they are stretched out before the first ride huh?
And yes I down voted your post because there are plenty of good, almost mint used bikes without stretched frames that are affordable to buy, build, and most importantly have fun on for way way way less than a new bike. Get a grip messenger man.

You had me rolling until I realized you were serious! Even then I laughed even harder...Laughing Pure comedy.

All this shit about stretched out frames cracks me up. there are about 500 entries at any given AHRMA National that are having the time of their lives on that stretched out stuff.

Truth be known, I see more photos of new aluminum frame bikes crawling in two different directions than I do old steel framed vintage bikes.

I bought a used 2005 YZ250 for $1500, rebuilt the entire motor and bought a new cylinder, 2015 plastic kit from Rocky Mountain and ordered custom graphics for it and total including the bike I am $3000 into it. Guess what, no frame stretching, no cracks or any other issues. Bike is solid! 06 or newer forks and I'd have basically have a 2015+ for $5000 less than a brand new one.

My earlier response got clipped anyway... even weekend warriors jump massive tabletops these days... back in the day it were mainly ski jumps etc... If you wanna see some serious stretched out frames 85 cc... over here they sell aftermarket 85 cc frames.

What's more likely to break on a used bike causing injury?

Buying a bike is still manageable for many but, maintaining there is where it go wrong too often with folks who spent their last money... Things can go wrong with a new bike as well but the risks are lower in every way... Poeple who have money can handle some risk... if things the go wrong they swallow a few times and move on. Maybe provocative but too often it’s the way poeple count why they have no money.

The point is not everyone is a serious amateur racer. For 6k this bike could likely be fixed up and ridden for fun for the next 10 years including the purchase of riding gear, gas, oil, maintenance and damage. So you are not actually exposing yourself asuch as buying a new bike.

Thanks. the marketplace will only let me search a 100 mile radius. Makes for a lot of aimless searching, eh?

At my poorest point I had a $700 1997 RM125 with blown fork seals. I still had fun, and have always at least had a bike for 22 years straight. Sometimes the collected dust for a while, but to me it was better than not having a bike. Been a while since I was younger and poor, but I can still have fun on an $800 Chinese pit bike.

Another thing about this bike. In decent condition and running it will always be a $1500.00 bike. Buy it, fix it up, ride it for a few years, sell it for $1500.00. Hmmmm, you just had a free bike for the past few years. Yes, A FREE BIKE. What more could you ask for?

Steeds new $10,000.00 450 will eventually end up in the $1500.00 category as well at a loss of $8500.00 to a couple owners along the way.

I recently bought a 2002 RM125 with frozen bottom end for $600. Bike still had stock tires and chain/sprocket. PO ran it with little to no oil in the gas, toasted the motor, then let it sit for years. I put $1,000 into it for new bottom and top end, suspension rebuild, new tires and some minor stuff. The bike runs great and works perfect for my 2 track days a month. I love having a super clean bike that runs great that cost me about the same as a new 4 stroke exhaust. I am not super fast, but I pass guys on those $10,000 2018 4 strokes all day long.
