I'm pretty new to following SX regularly. (I've followed a little bit for decades.)

Throughout the broadcast, the broadcasters, interviewers, racers, everybody constantly talks about how special Daytona is.

Is this just a racer thing? Is it just a broadcaster thing?

Do other fans love Daytona?

For me, I find the Daytona race to be my least favorite SX event each year. The track is weird. The lighting doesn't seem to be as good. The lack of all the Feld/Monster bells and whistles makes it feel like a less special event.

It's well received by all because the technical aspect of the track and sand composition creates close and exciting races. Also many racers that are considered stronger at outdoors motocross seem to think the layout is more favorable to their riding styles, of course the supercross only guys want to prove that false. Certainly one of my favorites.

A big part of it is the history and heritage of the facility and the fact that they have had a race there since the early seventies. I assume you realize how much the event has changed relative to what it once was. It is still unique but not like it used to be. Still though every motocrosser worth his salt wants his name on the list of winners because it's Daytona!

I think it's legendary from NASCAR, but then motorcycles also did their 200 miler there. Did they used to race on the beach too, or just the cars? For sure the cars did long ago. It's a "classic" venue, Daytona = racing.

At the beginning of the season, they run some classic cars down the beach. People get out and watch, it's like an annual parade or whatever. My mom has seen it in person (old people also love Florida).

Anyhoo, the motorcycle race (the Daytona 200) kicks off the motorcycle roadrace season, during "bike week" down there. Since it kicks off the AMA road season, with the supercross and flat track there, it's the world center of motorcycle racing, or whatever they call it.

So it's a very special place for bikes for (at least) a week out of the year.

The race has a history stretching back nearly to the origins of professional motocross in the USA. The Daytona International Speedway is probably the
most illustrious motor racing venue in the USA.
The riders who have won the Daytona Supercross compose a list of some of the greatest legends of our sport. The event has a history of being longer and more brutal, and harder to win, than other Supercross races. They used to run a 40 rider gate for the main event back in the 70s and 80s.

^^^ What they all say. IMO, Brayton's win was comparable to Dale Earnhardt Sr. winning the Daytona 500 back in 1998....it was monumental to say the least. Lots of heritage there, and bragging rights that will last a lifetime for the winner of any event there. We all witnessed a race that made the Moto History book, or maybe that will fall under SX History....

If I’m not mistaken the original Daytona 200 was ran on the beach. History.

I think its big as far as supercross heritage. I think they go over the top with the claims from a motorsport point of view though. This whole 'world centre of racing' thing is a bit daft. Ask anyone with global knowledge of motorsports to give you their top 5 motorsport locations and I doubt Daytona gets a look in.

I think its bigger here in the US for those that follow oval style racing.

From a supercross point of view I think it produces a great track and always seems to throw up some great racing. I LOVE the fast sections with the ATV camera showing riders going head to head.

To understand it you need to understand the history of the SX event.
I'll touch a little on it from the best I can remember.
Daytona used to be more of an outdoor style track with a full 40 rider gate back in the day and the Supercross was during the day - not at night.
Gary Bailey designed some of the great tracks that would get pretty rough & tough.
The Supercross was one the highlights of bike week(bike week used to be a big deal) also with a lot of the bigwigs from the OEM's & industry in general in town. So a lot of eyes(Japan Big Wigs) were at the event - so riders wanted to do well and winning the event always seemed to be treated more prestige then any other Supercross of the season.
Also Gainesville/Gatorback used to be the outdoor national opener which was normally the weekend before Daytona.
That helped hype up the event too...
And yep SX & MX seasons used to overlap each other.

Anyway with all that said....the hype and tradition of the event has always carried on for some reason. Smile

I personally enjoy watching the event because it's still a little different with a longer track that seems to get rough.
But unfortunately this season the races were a bit shorter.
It's not what it used to be.

A little more...
Daytona was a MX event 1971,1972 & 1973.
The actual SX started in 1974 if I'm not mistaken.

I think the 1st Daytona MX was a couple years before the 1st Supercross Super Bowl in Cal.

It is the only Supercross race that AMA/Feld are not putting on.

IMO I like the SX Alpinestars Medical crew better than the Daytona Speedway medical crew.

Yep it was Trans-AMA race the first year in 71.
Then the 2nd & 3rd year it was an AMA MX national.
74 was the first year of the actual SX.

Idk about you guys but Daytona is my favorite event of the year behind A1 and hangtown. It’s a different Scene, new environment, and generally a bitchin track to watch the riders haul ass on. It’s sorta like winning the Indy 500 or the Monaco GP, you may never win another event or championship again, but if you won Daytona, you’re a a badass. Same goes for the Indy 500, Monaco, and daytona 500 IMO

You can never truly appreciate Daytona until you have been there, I never really got it, then I went and now I get it.

Awhile back I was looking at old Cycle News articles on their archive website, and it's really tough to piece together what all was going on in that 1972-1976 range. 1976 seemed to be the first year that the word "Supercross" was being used. And best I can tell, the events in the LA Coliseum weren't counting for points until 76.

Watching from TV, it looks like the seats are not very close at Daytona and it would be a bad place to watch in person. That's not the case?

It used to be something special as it was a pretty brutal track by SX standards. Now seems to just be a standard sandy SX track. You would always put your $ on the outdoor specialist when it was time for Daytona, it so much anymore. I think motorcyclist go a little overboard on the “Daytona” mystique. Daytona to me is famous for the 500 and the history/importance in racing, not the 200 or SX. Judging by what it appears on TV it looks like the viewing would suck ass in person.

Never been in person but as a viewer on TV it is my least favorite to watch.

Yeah they originally used the term Superbowl of motocross. Smile

In the vault you can find it all in regards to ama sx & mx.
Here's when the SX season first started here in 74 - just 3 events by what it shows.
https://vault.racerxonline.com/1974/sx/intro
Then in 75 just four events and then they slowly start having more events each year.

Here's some footage from 1975 the second year of the SX at Daytona.

Based on what? By 'world' do you mean America?

It opened in 1959 and hosts (according to Wikipedia) NASCAR, ARCA, AMA Superbike, USCC, SCCA, and Motocross. Capacity 101,000

Lets compare to the quick top 5 I just got from the internet of other notable places:

The Circuit des 24 Heures du Mans (also known as Circuit de la Sarthe) first opened 1923, hosts 24 Hours of Le Mans, capacity 263,500

Nurburging Nordschleife - opened 1927, hosts basically every distance or endurance circuit event you can think of, plus tens of thousands of amateur track day enthusiasts , 150,000 capacity

Circuit de Monaco - Opened 1929 , Hosts F1, F1, Formula E, Historic Grand Prix, capacity 37,000

Autodromo Nazionale Monza, 1922, F1, Le Mans Series, National and World Motorcycles, World Touring Car, World Superbike, capacity 113,000

Silverstone, 1948, F1, MotoGP, World Endurance, World Rallycross, World Superbike, Euro Le Mans, F2, F3000, Touring Car, Silverstone Classic, Capacity 150,000

Thats before we consider: Spa-Francorchamps, Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Laguna Seca or the Isle of Man.

I just don't think Daytona is on the same page, but that is just me.

IMO it's because it's different. A lot of the SX tracks and venues all look the same whereas Daytona has it's own feel, more like 50% SX and 50% MX. Then of course there is the history.

Those 5 don't mean as much to me just like Daytona doesn't mean much to you. Guess it's all relative to what your familiar with. I remember growing up what a big deal the bike week events were as well as being a NASCAR fan so I get it's appeal/history there as well. In all fairness you can name off a bunch of places in the world that may be better in one way or another, but Supercross is an American based series so therefore yes the most famous piece of American Motorsport history is going to be held in higher regards. Most American fans have no idea about any of those tracks you posted.

It's worrying (and probably what's wrong with sport and it's fans in general today) that you lose interest if it doesn't have the "Monster bells and whistles" to keep it interesting.

You don't find a semi-outdoor rough, longer lap time with unusual obstacles the slightest bit interesting to break the monotony of a 17 race schedule?

I think you are incorrect on that. Daytona IS a world renown track. Especially for onroad stuff. You have the outer loop for Nascar and indy , but also the inner / outer loop combined for GT cars and bikes. The only other track for onroad that might rival it here in the states is probably COTA. But even there , COTA doesn't have the versatility that Daytona has. And COTA is used by Formula 1. So that should tell you something.

The Daytona SX is a one of a kind , mainly because it is held there.....at Daytona. And with the track usually being a SX / MX hybrid type track , it is very special indeed.
