Daytona Pass Counts (including season totals to date)

Daytona is always refreshing - something new in the middle of the season. There are a few interesting quirks in the numbers too, due to the long lap times.

In the 250s it was the second lowest passing race of the East region so far (only Arlington main 3 was lower), but as riders only completed 14 laps the 4.35 passes/lap figure is the highest of the regional season so far. The 450 race had the second least passes too (44 total), only slightly ahead of St.Louis's 38. Unlike in the 250 class, this is reflected in the pass/lap figure as well (Daytona - 2.44, St.Louis - 1.46).

Starling's and Hill's 5 passes each are worth pointing out, as neither will show in GuyB's Movers and Shakers. Starling initially fell from 18th to 20th over the first 4 laps, but then was able to capitalise on other riders' mistakes and get himself up to a 15th place finish. Hill on the other hand, made 5 passes after getting caught in the aftermath of McElrath and Smith's tangle, before making a mistake and falling back to 21st (ahead only of the DNFed Smith).

Halpain and Marquier were both victims of an unusually good start on the passes conceded list. Halpain first crossed the finish line in 6th, and was ale to stay in the top 10 for the first 3-4 laps before fading to 18th. Similarly, Marquier faded to 17th from a 9th place start (although did net himself 2 passes on his way back through the field)




Nothing new in the 450s with Tomac doing it the hard way after a 6th place start. Reed showed some raciness in his recovery from an 18th place start to 13th, battling with Bloss along the way. Sipes will no doubt be disappointed with the start of his race - after spending the first 4 laps in 21st (last on track after Baggett's 1st corner DNF), he was able to recover to finish 16th.

There weren't many standouts in the passes conceded list either. Bowers's -7 is the result of a DNF from 15th. Plessinger will no doubt regard Daytona as one of his better performances of the year. He lost three spots to Webb, Tomac and Barcia on lap 3, and despite getting round his team mate mid race, Barcia passed him again with 2 laps to go to give him -4. It's only the comparatively stagnant race that has left him 3rd on the conceded list.



Both classes are a prime example of why passes conceded is not a statistic on which to judge a rider's performance - Halpain, Marquier and Plessinger all raced well from good starts.


Updated season totals to date:
Marchbanks has been showing pace all season, albeit from poor starts up until Daytona. Hill has been racing well throughout the season too, just lacking consistency. Sexton has been mirroring Roczens technique of starting well and staying up front to put him 18th on the passes made total.

Smith's disastrous night in Arlington is dominating his total. McElrath is pulling a Tomac in the passes conceded list, having been passed only twice in the season so far.



Tomac's passes total is bordering on ridiculous, with his 74 passes putting him more than 20 ahead of Barcia on 53. Conversely, Roczen has preferred to do his winning by getting good starts, and therefore sits in 20th with 22 total passes - under a third of Tomac's total.

Baggett has not enjoyed this years triple crowns with 49 of his 86 places lost coming from Glendale and Arlington. The number 4 has had 5 races in which he hasn't conceded a pass, but has been let down by mistakes (and collisions...) in the other 5. Friese is currently living up to his reputation for starting well and fading. It's also worth noting that Tomac and Roczen are tied in 23rd on -11, and Barcia sits in 27th on an impressive -6 for the season.

Diggin these stats! Thank you for putting this all together. Tomac is a straight up animal. And barcia only being -6 is very impressive as well
