I'd say the number one rule of the D class is to never publicly admit that you are in the D class!

No that's not true.

Grip the bike with your knees/legs.
Accelerate on the face of the jump.
Land with the throttle on.

Those are the basics to jumping.

Not true, unless your local series has that special rule. Not ashamed to admit I was once a sandbagging D rider when I first started. PODIUM D class rider, that is.

Nothing, but seeing from your post count you haven't been here long enough to know the ratio of 10+ bs responses for every 1 decent response.

D class is great because everybody in it grinds so hard to make c class. D class races are some of the funniest/best races to watch

The original beginner class. It used to be ...

Beginner
Junior
INT
Pro

Now days , most tracks just have a C , B and A class , along with age classes and bike size. There really isn't a " real " D class around here any more I don't think. And watching some of the guys in the back of the C class now days , I sure wish they would bring it back.

No Eddy! That is the Vet class! Never show up on practice day without a couple of cold 40's!

There used to be this dude about 30 years old that used to PIR in the 125 Begger class back in about 1989.
No joke, every Thursday as we were headed over to the track,we'd drive by this tavern and his truck would be there with his bike in the back.I assume he was always getting primed, because the guy always smelt like booze. So we nicknamed him Yukon Jack. Smile

D class round here consists of C class riders. Never really understood the significance of winning by 30 seconds.

Anyways, to answer your question OP. The only stipulation I'm aware of here in the south is you get moved to C after so many wins. (5 I think?)

I think I fucking remember that dude! No shit!

There was another guy who raced woodland a few times back in the day. Total beginner guy. Came up to my buddy Broc who was a fast INT and wanted some starting gate advice. Dude was looped out on coke really bad! He raced a CR500 on top of it. Broc told him to pin the throttle , sit back on the seat and just dump the clutch as soon as he cleared the concrete. The guy did exactly that...and about 30' out of the starting gate , he looped her bad! Never saw that guy again haha.

He was a short dude...he had a buzz-cut and a whiskey nose.
He rode an older white KTM 125 that was pretty thrashed...I forget his number and his real name.
I'll have to ask my dad sometime and see if he remembers the guys name.

MXSports amateur events offer a "D" class. It's also known as the "offroad" class. Supposed to be for woods guys. I ran it last year at High Point on Sunday...was a mudfest and I got 2nd...only because I simply would not give up. Never realized just how terrible High Point Raceway is when it's muddy.

I hate when the "D" class has more riders on the gate than the C and B classes. then you watch them and they are running fast laps. To add to the insult after the race they pull up to fully wrapped trailer with their name and number all over it.

yeah sooooooooo beginner huh?

That never gets old! Just watched it a few days ago.

As far as the D class goes, I think it's needed. Most places here in SoCal still have a beginner class. I'm sure a lot won't agree with this, but I'm all for the rules of no jumping certain things. If you are out doing all the jumps on the main track, you have no business racing beginner. If a kid goes out and beats the rest of the beginners by 7-10 seconds move him up! Same with the rest of the classes.

I'm glad I'm finally 25 and can ride the +25 class because none of the promoters will move anyone up anymore. When I was racing 450 novice a few years back, there were 2 kids a couple years younger than me that finished first and second every weekend for 3 years straight and the race promoter would not move them up. They were turning intermediate speed lap times and the rest of us were a very distance third, fourth, fifth place etc.

Back in November of 2013 I was racing the final round of a local series at Glen Helen. Some pro from Venezuela showed up that weekend and raced 450 Novice. The first moto he absolutely smoked us. His lap times were faster than most of the pros and yet the promoter let his race the second moto in 450 novice still. I ended up holeshotting the second moto, but as soon as we went up the first hill the guy yarded all of us. He destroyed us again. These promoters need to have certain rules for each class to keep the sand bagging from happening. If I were a promoter I'd have no problem loosing that one racer because he didn't like being moved up compared to losing a couple because I didn't move a sand bagger up. That's just me though

I don't remember when the "C" class was officially begun, but I remember back in 1983 when racing at Honda Hills, Dick Klamfoth had a 125 C class. If you won a race you moved to B, if you finished top three "3" times, you moved to B. I think the reason he ran C class for 125's was because he had to run two divisions of 125B. Can you imagine. Having to split a class into 2 divisions because they wouldn't all fit on the fate and STILL having to make a C class to prevent a third 125 division. Man, those were the days.
