Any opinions? CRF is coming up on a piston change as per the manual, so thinking of ordering this....of course, while I am in there, seems like all of Jay Clarke's bikes with this kit get the stage 2 hotcam to go with it...

Right now, I figure the kit is about 425, and the cam is about 175...and then I'll send the ECU to Eddie S....has anyone had any personal use of this kit on their honda? Any opinions?

I just spun some laps on jay's bike your talking about, it is one of the most fun bikes I've tried, super long usable powerband. Big bore 250fs are fun, especially fuel injected ones.

The big bore 250f is awesome. The one complaint I have about it is they get HOT. I've run both cylinder works and Athena and they both do it. To the point where every time I'm spewing steam out of the overflow hose. I started running engine ice coolant and it totally fixed the problem. Other than that I absolutely love the big bore kits. And the stage 2 cam really opens them up too

Good info...it gets super hot here.

I'll pick up some engine ice for the build when it's done.

Anyone have a time frame from start to finish? I've done a million 2 stroke top ends before...built car motors, and sport bike motors..

Never once built a 4 stroke single setup. I have all the tools...

Depending on how smooth it all goes and valve adjustments. It's a very easy day job. Probably 4to 5 hours or so if all goes well

Nice. Speculate 15 hours on this brand new bike...

Will I need to plan on shimming the valves? I will check clearances, but should I order the shim kit also?

If there's only fifteen hours on the bike you would probably be ok but I would check clearances before you order just to be safe so you can get it all in one order if you need to

The RPM Ice Cube cylinder big bore kit does not run hot. It cost more, but will last longer and not run hot.

We've worked with them doing suspension for quite a few of these, so I've had a chance to speak with the riders after riding them "off the record". Each time I hear how fun they are to ride and how it's nice having the extra power with the handling of a 250f.

If you change the cam, your clearances will change. You will need the shim kit.

Not necessarily. When I put a stage-2 Hotcam in my CRF450 the clearances were exactly the same as the stock cam. I've had others tell me they had similar experience with Hotcams.

thankfully, a good local shop sells them (The shims) ala carte, or the whole kit.

What were you feelings on the stage 2 cam? Wake the bike up, or?

I put stage 2s in one of my Kawis (I know a lot different than a honda but...) and it made a huge difference. I did that before I put the big bore kit in. If your a rider that rides high in the rpm's like I do it will really surprise you. I mean I noticed a considerable difference everywhere but I really noticed a huge difference in the top. Them I added the big bore and it made the power smoother everywhere and pull soooo much harder off the bottom

Nice. I just mailed off the ECU to Eddie Sisneros...so hyped to get that, the kit, and the cam all in next week to try it out.

The stage-2 is very good in the 2009 and newer CRF450's. Stock they are pretty flat on top and the stage-2 gets you some over rev and top end. I've heard they are very good in the newer EFI CRF250's also.

I'll let ya ride it when it's done! I hope it does..the lack of power the crf is kind of sad when you look at maintenance needed...

Hey guys, any worries about piston to valve clearance? The stage 2 cam I figure will have some more lift and duration, but the 270 is still stock compression....again, any worries?

Unless something is severely out of whack you shouldn't have a single issue. I know that I didn't have any anyway

Easy job to do but since it's your firet 4 stroke job take your tirme. I have the works kit and hotcsm stage 2, yosh pipe and Eddy map and my bike is a blast to ride. You should order a new rear sproket right away. Last thing you should change the rear rim for a 2.15 and run 110 tire because of the added power you will need more grip.

Charley, what's the recommended gearing change?

I already have a chain and sprockets waiting to go on. I think factory on the '12 is a 49/50....I ordered a 51.

Edit: Big bore kit and cam are here. Eddie Sisneros is one bad ass guy; I mailed the ECU friday, he got it tuesday (They're open Tuesday-Saturday)...and it'll be here tomorrow. Going to build the motor on Thursday.

I think stock is a 49 and I went for a 48. If you go with a 51 the gear will be too short because of the increase power. The 49 was a little bit short for my taste but in technically trails it was perfect.

I will definitely return the 51 and get a 48.

So I'm not doing much in the way of tight, technical trails. This will be only for motocross.

I am going to try the 51, and see how it is. If it puts me in 4th gear where I was in 3rd, I am OK with that. If it's tooo short, then I'll look to change.

Edit: I am looking to go to a 110 rear tire, as well.

You will be wasting your time with the 51. For 50$ a new sproket don't loose time and order a 48 right away. Even a stock engine with a 51 is a gearing for real SX track.

To give you an idea, I raced the MTA world vet race in Glen Helen 3 weeks ago and I was going on top on Mt Helen and ''the finger'' in 4th gear without issue.

Bike is together, motor sounds mean. It's running smooth, and feels good around my house. When idling down from snapping the throttle, the idle will hang at 3-4k. Once a load is put on, it drops back to 2k.

Any ideas?

Sigh, and now i realise; I was turning the idle knob counter clock wise, and that's backwords.

I'll start the bike tomorrow and mess with the idle
