If I wanted to have a custom axle made what would be recommended for the metal?

I have read about 4140 and 4340 Steel. What are OEM axles made of? Would the metal need to be heat treated or anything? Sorry, I know nothing about machining and metals.

if you make custom parts or have a machine shop and are interested send me a PM.

41xx steel (aka chromoly) is suitable for axles provided it’s heat treated and tempered. 4340 might be overkill but suitable as well. Talk to a machinist.

If you're going high end, use some 4340 heat treated to HRc 36 or so. It turns nice and is really strong; no need for post machining heat treatment. Electroless nickel coat for some bling and corrosion protection.

4130 is nice for tubes and welded structures, but a bit notch sensitive, so I wouldn't use it for an axle.

That's some basic advice. More detailed advice would require more details of the application. But the above is likely overkill for a general moto axle. Better overkill than have a failure later, though.

I know a few engine builders that use 4140 for building race crankshafts. However is not the exact same application.
