Crew cab short bed vs extended cab long bed truck

Looking for some input from people regarding their moto truck which they also use as a daily driver. I'm leaning toward a crew cab with short bed but that means I'm going to have to transport with the tailgate down and likely use a bed extender. Has anyone found this to be an issue and preferred they got the longer bed instead?

Likewise, anybody get the extended can and then wish the the had the extra interior space of the crew can? Thx.

The best option is a crew cab with a 6.5ft bed.

I just went from an extended cab f150 with a 6.5ft bed to a crew cab f150 with a 5.5ft bed. Tailgate was open while transporting both bikes on both trucks. So really the gain is the cab room. And trust me its worth it. Will never go back to a smaller cab.

Silverado crew cab short bed, 2 bikes front tire in each corner rear tires in center of bed and tail gate closed.

I carry people and things inside way more than I have a need for an extra foot of bed space.

I have a Tundra crew max with the 5.5’ bed. I carry one bike corner to corner with tailgate up or two bikes straight in and use straps across the back to secure gear bags etc.

+1 on the extra cab room. You will use that every time you drive vs only when you are hauling bikes.

Cant go wrong with an older long bed! When it gets scratched or dented i could care less and I love being able to have the tailgate up at all times!

I use a 98 k1500 extended cab shortbed. I keep the tailgate down, but can close it if I load it sideways obviously.

If I had 1-2 inches I could close the gate lol

Have a 2016 F-150 SuperCrew with 5.5 ft bed and can close tailgate with bike diagonal. Can’t use rear view mirror then, but being able to lock tailgate is nice.

If you transport people with any regularity then the crew cab is a better choice. If I were single/no kids then I’d prefer the extended cab based on styling.

I have a titan with the extended bed and it was the worst decision I have ever made. Definitely go with the extra cab space unless you plan on never having more than 2 people in your vehicle.

Crew cab/short bed all day. Much rather have the inside room than the bed room. I can throw a twin size air mattress inside which is a big plus for me, bicycles and whatnot as well without feeling super cramped up.

crew cab with 6.5', the extra cab room is nice and no way I would've got that tine box, might as well get a ridgeline if you are going to do that

I have a crew can dodge 2500 with a “standard” bed, which I believe is 6 foot and some change, and bike fits just fine. However, I put my front tire all the way to the left and move my rear tire over to the opposite side but still have plenty of room

I have a supercrew 5.5' f150. My dad has a screw with a 6.5' bed. His is perfect without going to a 3/4 ton long bed. His is an stx and mines a platinum (wife likes bells and whistles). If I come across a deal on a loaded screw 6.5', I'll trade mine in. I'm pretty picky about motor/gear combo tho. I love my 5.0 with 3.73s in it so it would likely have to be the same combo. I load mine like daboza does which feels super cramped compared to my previous trucks, but it's sort of a compromise since my wife daily drives it.

Without a doubt, get the supercrew can size and you'll never regret it. I promise you that in time, if you buy an extended cab, you'll regret it. You can make either bed size work.

Get a Chevy Suburban and a trailer. I'd get a 16Ft trailer minimum.

I usually always get extended cabs with the longer bed. I currently have a 2017 titan extended cab and I have 3 kids. More than enough room for them back there, rarely do I ever haul adults, and if I did they can suck it up.

I have a crew cab with the 5.5ft bed. 99% of the time it's just my bike I haul. I am actually glad I didn't get the 6.5ft box, the shorter truck is easier to maneuver in the cities, and its easier to fit it in the garage when I need too.

I have a crew cab and longer bed on my truck, but if I had to give one thing up, it definitely wouldn't be the cab.

Crew cab short bed for me. The cab space is way more important with two kiddos. That’s with a tonno cover frame somewhat in the way as well.

In case you are considering the Crew cab AND 6.5 ft bed just know it will cost you roughly $4-5K more than either the Crew with 5.5' bed or the Extended cab with 6.5' bed, if you are buying new.

I have the extended cab with 6.5' bed, but I think either will get the job done if you are just hauling one bike.

If you are hauling more than 1 bike either get the 6.5' bed with extended cab or drop the extra $4k+ for the Crew Cab with 6.5' bed. Also think about other things you will use your truck for besides moto. Will you need to haul things in your bed regularly, if so will 5.5' work? If you have kids in a carseat the extended cab is tight. My son's car seat just fits in my truck with the front seat the whole way up, good thing my wife is short. I'm not too tall either, 5'8", but idk if I can put my seat the whole way up like my wife when baby #2 comes.

I've had all of them.

For the long haul and if I'm not carting 3 or 4 people around ALL the time...
And for LESS MONEY...

I'd get the Extended/Quad/Super Cab woth a 6.5 foot bed that I can close and lock. More room for your bike and gear and a bit more secure when going down the road.

In the case of the GM-Chevy/Ram & I think the Toyota (?)...you get 4 REAL DOORS in the smaller cab. I currently have a Colorado Crew ZR2 and I'd never get one, again, for hauling bike and gear. I'd never get anything shorter than a 6.5" bed EVER again in anything other than a Raptor (Only ed avail and NOTHING like it for true "off-roading". Period).

Btw, currently...I'm NOT BUYING ANYTHING GM since I've had a run of TRANSMISSION issues ranging from "Bad Fluid from THE FACTORY"(Colorado) to failing torque-converters (K1500 and Yukon). The most unreasonbly disappointing failure has been the ZR2 (One rear shock and te current trans issue).

So, I;m back to buying Fords. Got a new Transit Van (AWESOME) and I'm awaiting a Raptor.

Just to clarify on this, the Ram 2500 has a "regular" bed of 6'4" and a "long" bed of 8'. While the Ram 1500 has a "regular" bed of 5'7" and a "long" bed of 6'4".

I'm currently shopping for a Crew Cab 1500 with a 6'4" bed. They aren't easy to find.

Currently driving my second F150 crew cab long bed. Would never go back to the shortbed. Besides being able to close the tailgate (only possible if you put the bike in on an angle) the other huge bonus is being able to pull a trailer or camper with bikes in the bed. With the shortbed I wouldn’t be able to turn without the camper/trailer hitting the tailgate in the down position.

That’s correct. I had the 1500 ram before I moved up to the diesel and the 2500 and the short bed in the 1500 wasn’t enough space, I made do but I like the regular bed on the 2500 much more

I have a double cab 6.5’ bed Tundra. It works just fine. Any shorter of a bed I wouldn’t be a big fan of to be honest.
