Are you a squid when you crash out of the lead or does one take pride you were leading?

I had one serious get off after grabbing the holeshot the second moto at Carlsbad back in the day. I had holeshot the first moto as well (third gear starts on a CR500 will do that) and then put it on cruise for a 4th and had a similar plan the second moto. Unfortunately it only lasted as far the third turn when I crashed on the same jump Malherbe broke his leg on as well.

It retrospect my shock was hammered and I was beat from business travel to NY during the week so it was a bit of a perfect storm for a big crash but I've always felt like a bit of a squid for crashing out like that. After 22 years of this shame I could really use a clearing. LOL

I holeshot at Matchams park former British Grand Prix track, sandy, big sand whoops and berms, great track now long closed although I have heard a rumour of it re opening, anyway it was about 10-12 years ago, 3rd or 4th turn and I decided to chuck my bike at the scenery, down a bank into some bushes, took me and and 2 random dudes the whole moto to dig the bike out, I did win £10.00 from the promoter for the holeshot though Cool
Don't feel bad we can't be the only two dudes on here..... good thread.

Yep, forgot about Byrner too.

Don't remeber local dudes crashing out of the lead either. 15-20 years ago a guy flew out of the woods with a nice lead at Grantsburg and jumped way, way too far into huge sand whoops. It was an embarrassingly spectacular crash and subsequent loss. Dude looked awesome until the crash though. Pretty sure it was Amatuzio, but then again I could be wrong. No one remembers these things. Silly

Loved that track, rode it after JB sorted it for the GP, those steps/drops in the middle could got sketchy!
Saw an advert for a three race series there a couple of weeks back so fingers crossed.

Crashed once while leading, slid out power slide style after the second corner. Still got up and won, but what should've been an easy day became a difficult one.

Also crashed once while running from the cops. Of course it was early four stroke days when they were hard to start. Had to find top dead center, hot start lever etc. I didn't even look back to see if the cop was on foot chasing or still in his car as I knew panic would ensue and I'd mess up the drill. Not sure how close he was when I got going but it had to be inches.

Both of those incidents remain burned into my shrinking memory bank.

Had a pretty amazing +25 sec start to finish lead 3 years back and 3 laps before the checkered flag I crashed out hard and broke both of my wrists. It sucks but you're not a squid! How many times did stewart crash while being comfortable in the lead? Or Davalos or even Carmichael

Back when Mike Kidd was promoting arenacross', I went out to the Cow Palace in SF. Grabbed the holeshot on my 1990 YZ250, made it through the first rhythm section, then a left hand turn and launched it off the "big" jump. Literally launched it. All I remember seeing is the rafters. Not a pretty landing...because it wasn't a landing. More like a squid being thrown on to the hockey rink. Survived and I'd like to think I had a little something to do with MIke KIdd's new venture Scramblecross.

It happens to the best of us, bud. I washed out in a slippery downhill turn at Glen Helen in 2002 and dislocated my shoulder while leading. I was about to get the white flag.

I was leading and a wind gust caught me on a little 60' pop up jump and I did the highside splat. Lucky to walk out of it.

No shame in crashing any time...it happens.

Happens to everyone at some point. Holeshot, crash...trying to make up ground and push too hard, crash. You're not a squid, you're a racer.

I'd guess most racers feel like a squid when they crash while leading. I did it at Mammoth once and I felt like a total squid!

Done it , it sucks.

Only thing that sucks more , is never getting to lead a race to crash out of.

I was never good at holeshots... but I scored a big one in the 3rd moto of the LL regional at Echiconnee. There was a new section with 4 smaller jumps that I was going 2-2 in all weekend. With the lead on the first lap, I just pinned it and ended up wadding it big time. Got up with a bent bike and raced back to about 10th to earn a qualifying spot overall. Ended up with a broken collarbone. Got cleared the week before LL.

First ride on new bike, first EFI. Haha.
Dude that was a harsh crash. Too much front brake and tucked the front end?

motoxdoc-Never led at Mammoth and second place start was the best I ever got up there.

I was at the race in the Cow Palace in SF. Fun time. I remember the track. The rubber band start was something that was different. That jump you crashed on was huge for us amateurs. I crashed after the jump and right turn as you went into the whoops in practice. I thought they did a great job running the event way back in the day.

Been there done that and I felt like a total spode! I pulled a rare holeshot against a local vet who never gets beat to the first turn and had a nice gap 2 laps in. I relaxed too much, turned in to soon and grazed the front wheel on a wall of dirt and fell off. I was ticked off at myself and rode like a mad man after that...lol.

Yup, in all my glory a couple of times racing 30+B. Nice checked out lead, and dumped it. Another time, a rider was down and he was fine, but the flagger was waving a red cross flag(I had just watched SX the night before, and in my head I said oh no, red cross flag, don't jump these doubles, and then Joe P doubles through the whole section, and I lose to his ass!) Rule of thumb, never think you are in a SX race when racing a local race.

Nah, determined not going fast enough in that short straight, grabbed a handful, thrown off the back. Damn EFI. lol

I pulled the holeshot at a hare scramble that was incredibly dusty. Crashed three times before getting passed. The dust was my friend that day although I think that instance has squid written all over it.

I used to pull a lot of holeshots and work my way back to 4th or 5th.

I never get a good start.. This one time I grabbed the hole shot and stalled it in the 3rd corner lol. Also leading a race for every lap until the last lap only to tip over in a rut with 2 turns to go and not get the bike started and finishing 10th. Unsure I also had this one race where I crashed at the start, rode like a mad man and getting all the way up to 2nd again only to crash while trying to pass the leader. I was done for the day lol
