I've been looking for a 125 project bike for a little while now, and the pure bullshit I see on Craigslist is really grinding my gears. Every bike has a "fresh top end with 3-5 hours on it" and is "completely rebuilt"....when in all reality they just are roached out turds. I see a bunch of 2003-2005 Kawi 125's and steel frame Yami's for $3k+....which, in my opinion, is just ludicrous for a 10-15 year old clapped 125. it also amazes me how many people do not even know the year of their machine.

I am blaming you two stroke jabronis for allowing these dummies to think that every two stroke out there is made of gold. Shit, I bought an '06 Kawi 250 last year for $1800 and it is absolutely mint, with a whole pile of extra parts.

Haha!

In 2007, 8, 9 I saw almost nobody interested in two strokes or riding/racing them. Now everyone is trying to find an old two-stroke to rebuild for nostalgia, or as a play bike... I think the demand is increasing and I see probably 30% two strokes on any given day at the local tracks here in Washington.

Same here in Texas. 2 strokes seem to be growing in popularity. I switched from a 4 stroke to two stroke about 3 years ago and love the change. I do miss the low end power on the 450, but everywhere else, the 250 2t really helps me out.

I run into the same problem looking around for an old two stroke. Basically complete garbage gets listed for top dollar.

Better yet, I saw a guy asking fucking MSRP for a 3 year old CRF250 that was in pretty rough shape. I texted him about it and he said "Well I dont want to start too low"....... really??

That's how it is in Canada. Except with every bike.

One guy even had in his description "air filter cleaned every 20 hours".

Used bike prices in the northeast are inconsistent at best and even worse with 2-strokes.

I bought a 2005 yz125 in good shape in 2010 for $1,800 sold it in 2013 for $1,850.

Jeezless, I don't even get 20 hours out of a piston in my 125!

I want to know what kind of filter-oil he is using.

Southeast here and I see a lot of the same stuff. 2.5k-3k for a clapped 125, with a "fresh top end" only 25 hours lol. Im always thinking damn it's a 125, at 20 hours you need another top end haha.

I got a good deal on my 03 CR250R. I am going to hold on to it, as I think 2-stroke demand is on the rise. I bought it for 1100 last year and have been slowly fixing it up, it wasn't clapped but it needed some love. I've done suspension and plastic and all basic wear items. I framed it and cleaned/greased everything.

I just sold my 06 kx250 a few weeks ago. I had so much interest in it it was crazy. 2 strokes are making a comeback! Not for racing, but for the rec rider.

I'd like to pick up a decent 125 just to fix it up, but I doubt I would ride it. I dont know, it's been 10 years since I rode a 125...

$1800 is pretty much the average price around here for a used 125.

Some pretty nice ones, too.

Extremely nice ones are still well under $3000.

It's just Craigslist in general. People shoot for the moon when they list their stuff.
Just keep watching. You'll find one. Just have to jump on them fast when they pop up.
I scored my mint one owner 2000 cr500 a few years back for $1800.
Good deals are out there, but so are the idiots dangling their bro bait.

How could you not want to buy a bike with new shock bearings?

I'll bet he's upgraded the power band, too.

Dang.... The Mississippi/ Lousiana market is dirt cheap after seeing everyone elses averages. Some cherry 125's around here for 900-1600 everyday. 250's between 1200-2500. I picked up a clean 03 rm125 with tons of stuff already on it, carbon ignition and clutch covers, frame guards, RG3 suspension front and rear, flat top piston, tons of other stuff, $850. Rides like a champ. Picked up a super clean 06 yz250 mint bike, $1400. Not to mention the 01 cr250 i got my son about a month ago for $1600

In 2007 I bought a NEW 04 Suzuki RM125 at a dealership in sumter SC. They had listed a bunch of new RM125's on ebay. 2007 was probably about when interest in two strokes bottomed out. Everyone had to have four strokes.

Got my NEW RM125 @ $2450. several others also sold in the high $2's
That dealership lost a few bucks on those bikes...

also around 2006, I bought two NEW 03 YZ250's (yes, new leftovers, never used, all paperwork) for $2700 each, and one NEW 04 YZ125 for $2450. These Yamahas were from a dealer who no longer carried Yamaha and the bikes were not part of a floor plan- he owned them outright. These were the last of the yamahas and he wanted them gone. Funny thing is, he had them listed on ebay too. Nobody bid! I won one YZ250 auction and when I got there to get it, made a deal on the rest.

Funny how times change, people were looking at these two strokes as worthless yestercycles

You can have my '03 Tom Morgan cr265.. Not a roach but not gonna let it go for $1800 either.

Fact is man these bikes are a diminishing resource. the price won't be going down on nice ones!

Damn, I am having trouble getting $1200 for my 02 RM in CA. I think that there is a huge difference between what people are asking on Craigslist and what they actually sell for. There are a lot of bikes that just hang on Craigslist forever.

My son put his '03 RM 85 on Craig's List for $950 and didn't get a single hit.

I put a more appealing ad in with better pics and maintenance history at the same price, and ended up letting it go for $750, just to get it out of the garage.

Not only 2 strokes. I looked on craigslist yesterday to see what a '13 KX450 is listed for because I"m looking to get rid of mine. There wasn't a single one less than $5000. Mine needs chain, sprockets, and an air box. I'd let it go for a thousand less than that in a heartbeat.

I was looking for a project 125 as well but came across this... I got it for $1800. It was in damn near perfect shape - he didnt know what he had. He just didnt like it. He had it jetted all wrong and once i got it right, i couldnt believe how good it ran. I dont know exactly what was done to the motor but it is fast. I've even had people ask me if its a big bore - its not as i did put a stock piston in it.

In my quest to find a decent 90-92 rm 250, I saw a newly listed 92 about 3 hrs away, no up close photos, but owner stated "very good condition" ...I asked for better photos, nope, that was to hard. I figured if it really is decent I better go look at it....made the 3 hr one way drive, what a complete piece of junk! Nothing was good on this bike, I did not even ask them to try & start it. I always try to see the positives about each bike, but this thing was not even a good parts bike. I could have choked the owner for the bull shit ad. 6 hrs sucked out of my life..I also like the clowns that have a piss poor attitude when your trying to buy their bike! WTF

Two words...desirability and nostalgia. this is no different than the muscle car market.

The muscle car market exploded when the people who grew up with them got bored with their milquetoast daily drivers (4 strokes) and finally had the money to invest in a part of their youth that excited them (2 strokes). Just like muscle cars, when a few that are looked up to made that change, it caught the attention of others who said, "oh yeah, I LOVE those things". Then they got one and relized that, at the level of their own skill set, the amount of strokes made little difference in their lap times, but the smile factor was through the roof.

Mate, you nailed it (for me anyway).

I have raced/ridden everything except a 500 2 stroke. Now at 45 I was looking for a fun play bike. I had fond memories of racing my KX250 so decided to buy myself a 06 YZ250 as a project. I got it for $800. Completely shagged. The fuel had varnished in the carb! Shocked

I’m looking forward to bringing her back to life and at the end I will have a nearly new bike (with SSS forks), for approx $3K total. Cool

Right now there are some crazy prices in the NE for 2 strokes. Took me almost a year to find a 250 2t. I ended up getting a well used 04 rm250 for $1800 last year put about 2k in it so far. Normally people want $2500 or higher for clapped out older 250s. I don't think some people realize how quickly they depreciate and if you rebuild them don't expect to make a profit. I try not to switch bikes often cause selling them is worse than buying.
4/14/2016 6:18pm
You pretty much have to look everyday and believe me it gets exhausting. I use searchtempest mainly as you put in your zip code and search distance and it will find all craigslist ads. Im currently looking a steel framed YZ250 or CR500 to make into a street legal enduro without much luck. The prices are crazy for everything offroad, not just bikes as I look for lots of things to fix up and sell.
