What happened?

I thought he had stalled it until i saw it more serious due to the white smoke. Any vital experts have any ideas? At least it wasn't the last time on a 250 battling for a title when it shut downWhistlingWhistling

Cooper said gas cap malfunction. We've had that happen with one of those vent tubes with the check valve that doesn't allow tank to vent, thereby bike gets no fuel. I thought it was odd how much smoke he was getting though.

Didn't look like it had much compression when he was kicking.... very weird indeed. At least it wasn't at the end of a series like Langstons wheel.

Just now watching the race so I'm not sure yet, but I can't see why it would be smoking if it was vapor locked like people were saying. Unless it really locked up and popped a head gasket? But I mean if that was the case I don't see it starting back up to burn the coolant and cause smoke/be able to be kicked over again

Vapor lock or fuel supply issues do not create smoke.

Burning coolant or oil does.

I have my theories, but I'll wait until another thread is started about the same topic.

He stated it was vapor lock after the race... What's your question?

So if it was a vapour lock... why all the blue/white smoke?? That's a very good question!!!

Smoke was from the crankcase vent being pulled into the intake via the airbox.

It was about to fail.

Boiling fuel, two different scenarios.

Raw fuel causes blue smoke???!?!??! Definitely was NOT unburnt fuel...was blue not white(ish). Even when it wasn't running or being kicked over there was smoke drifting out of the exhaust.

It all sounds like a smoke screen to me lol

Some silly uneducated comments in here. Fuel doesn't do blue smoke.
Unlucky for Webb as I thought he was capable of a perfect season

Vapor lock???? Omg. Sometimes these teams say the funniest things to cover their buts. Like it really matters, shit happens and parts break or go bad, they don't have to make up excuses which it seems they are. Or just giving us bad guesses. I figured he was gong to be undefeated in SX this year, it's to bad for Cooper that he had this issue.

Just stopped, seemed like little compression, blue and white smoke...my first thought was that enigine just swallowed a ring. But since it started and "ran normal", maybe not.

I've always been told: blue smoke = oil, white smoke = coolant, black smoke = fuel, blue smoke under acceleration = oil getting by rings, blue smoke with throttle off = leaky valve seals, blue smoke all the time = two stroke. Wink

Yeah, but boiled fuel due to hot conditions for Dungey. I thought Metty's deal was that it ran out of fuel.

Asking a rider to diagnose what it was on the podium is a little futile. I was there while Weege was talking to the team about what happened in the pits afterwards. I was told by another 250 mechanic that the Star guys were also running the bike up and down the pit area while the 450 race was going on, trying to get it to recreate what happened.

Best guess at this point is electrical.

Lots of speculation here, but no way it was vapor lock. My guess is that is was electrical, but we'll probably never here the truth from the team.

Did they not take the gas cap off and put it back on and then it started back up? Isn't that why Cooper said vapor lock? Can anyone that was there confirm the smoke was blue? Looked blueish on TV but that could have happened because the camera that captured it, the computer that processed it, or the TV that displayed it.

If it's electrical coulda been coincidental that he took the gas cap off. Put it back on and it fired.
