Why can’t a rider just use a cool vest like this that has Velcro straps in all the right places so they can remove it easily in the race? Removing it while they barely slow down, kinda like removing goggles

Agreed. I was looking at this very same one yesterday. Trying to figure out how I can DIY myself one with what I have laying around but for $100 this vest looks pretty legit.

Your chest is not what needs cooling. The top of your head, arm pits and crotch is where the ice need to goes. If you have a heat exhaustion problem, this is where the EMTs will start shoving ice packs.

That looks like it would severely restrict airflow and exasperate the issue of heat exhaustion in a high humidity environment like Florida. In between Motos it would be interesting to try to reduce body temp though!

Maybe for damage control, yes. As well as wrists, ankles, neck (specifically the left and right side where your vertebral and carotid arteries are that carry blood to your head) which stem from... Your chest. So if you start from the source before your're over heated... You minimize the chance of over heating.

They should put one of these in the mechanics area pointing at the track so any riders could go through it and cool off. It worked when I was 5 years old on a hot summer day.

Tomac rode his site lap with one. Seems like every little bit would help.

Ivan Tedesco forgot to take his off after the sighting lap at Freestone one year and said it was an absolutely miserable experience once it thawed out. Unfortunately, I can't remember if he finished or not.

Yes, Mettie is the one I was aware of - didn't know Tedesco had done it, too.

I tried this for a 100 degree 6 hour endurance roadrace I did a few years back. I tried it in practice first and it restricted airflow way too much which is the biggest part of keeping cool. I found a bottle of cool water poured on my under suit worked best that day right before I head out. I do the same with the hare scrambles I do now. I wear a tank top under jersey shirt that goes under my under jersey protector (did I get all the 'unders' in there?) That and some water on my head before I put on the helmet. At really hot races usually I'll have buddies douse me coming though start/finish a few times to keep my jersey wet.

Astars does make an 'mx cool vest' which might work for a 30 minute moto that has extra absorptive sections in it that is supposed to hold water. I don't think it would make it the 2 hours I need but I'd like to try one out on a practice day.
