I am planning on getting another bike in December and last week there was no thought of spending the money for a new one....butttt the more I look at that 2019 YZ 250f the hardest it gets to resist. Last January I bought a 2017 kx 250f with 33 hours on it for 3k, I know I won't find that kind of deal again but I have seen some 17s for 4k. Is it worth paying double for a bike that has a few upgrades and fresh motor? What do yall think?

If you need/want the newest, then the answer is obvious...one you only know however.

Pull the trigger on a 250 two stroke already. You can race all the same classes.

It sounds to me like you are already in love with the yammy!
Do it! Spoil yourself! You probably work hard for your money! Life is too short! Pull the trigger! Go buy yourself that shiny new Yamaha and push that thing out of your dealership with the biggest smile on your face!!

If I was you I would invest in better suspension and some motor mods and just ride but thats just me. I bought a 15 yz250f brand new and still ride it. While its always awesome to have a new bike, I will never buy a new bike ever again. Its just not worth the extra 3-4k when there are so many clean low hour bikes out there. Invest some money in your bike and keep your money in the bank.

Honestly a 250f with 33hrs for 3k is totally doable around my area. Id go so far to say one with 10hrs for 35 or less is doable

I'm seeing 2018 250Fs in the $5k range, and overall I see tons of good deals on fresh current to 1 year old bikes; makes it really difficult to justify buying a new bike. I've seen a few 2017 CRF450Rs for less than 6k, I've seen a couple of 2018 YZ450Fs for 6k as well. If you want a 2019 Yamaha I would just wait a few months and see if any pop up for sale. If not I'm sure there will be a good rebate in the late spring then you can score the brand new shiny one.

One bike that I wouldn't consider buying used is a KTM. Valves are basically double the price of Japanese bikes. I bought a 2016 350 (in Feb of 2017), had some issues...spent $500 to fix it, realized it was probably going to need valves at some point (probably cost in the $1800 range for valves, piston, and labor). I sold it and bought a brand new 2017. Haven't been happier with a bike purchase in my life.

Isn’t the 19 YZF coking with e-start? That’s a big change.

Say you keep the bike for 3 years... if you get a 2017 now it will be worth maybe $2000 in 2020, so it cost you $2,000 out of that $4000.

If you get a 19 and sell it in 3 years, maybe it’s worth $4,000, so you’ve lost $3,000 out of that $7,000.

Maybe the difference is closer then you think and you’d be on the best equipment buying the 2019.

What does it cost to rebuild a 250F factor that into your costing. One can be unlucky and have a second hand bike cost you more than a new one - New one can also grenade but at least you know the life story ...

@Ewan49 The last new bike I bought was a 2010 yz 250f when I was 18, working part time and going to college full time. I was worried about having the bike payment so I asked my grandma what she thought about it and she said if it will make you happy then do it! So I went straight there and got it lol

Sorry I forgot to mention that I sold the 17 Kx 250f a few months ago to pay off some other debts. Someone offered me 4500 for it so I let him get it. So right now I don't have a bike. Yes the 19 has e start and the phone app for mapping. It also has a button where you can switch between two different map settings while riding and a ton of changes from last years model.

Buy new. Sell in a year. Cost you about $2000 after that initial $7500 hit. You’ll get most of it back.

If you aren't in a rush and willing to wait till mid 2019 latest then maybe do that.

I purchased my 15 RMZ450, in May 2015. It had been owned by some total beginner who decided the bike was too much for him after a few rides. I paid £4500 for it and it was kitted out with all the bling and a full Yoshi system too.

Deals do pop up, just gota be prepared to be patient and keep searching like a hawk. Be ready for when a deal does come up as they go quick!

Go on cycletrader there's numerous dealers selling them between 7 and 8 with the cheapest in Georiga selling them for $6,999. My local dealer told me yesterday they can sell them for 7500 out the door.

depend on if you have the money and how well the used bike was cared for.

a new bike is $7500 with 0hrs

a used bike is $4000 with 100+? was it rebuilt? with oem? oil changed?.....

IF you buy new you get peace of mind and you can find some leftovers for good deals, i saw some 17-18 kx450 for 6k.

IF you buy used, you can find some good deals, about year and half ago i found a 03 yz250 with 15 hrs, for 1900, before that i had found a low hour kx124 2004 for 1k.

but i have come across a handful of used bikes that looked gtg but were basket cases 2 and 4 stroke alike.
most of the used bikes needed something done suspension wise, either because it was old and worn or was valved for someone else who was 50 lbs lighter than me. seats were crumbling, carbs were gunked, internals were worn out, broken clutch plates.

Your used bike isnt going to cost $4000. Add another $1000 for motor/chassis repair. Now youre up to $5000 and you might as well buy a new leftover for $5500-$6000 with zero hours on it.

Got a '14 RMZ250 in early '15. It now has just south of 80hrs on it. Been absolutely bulletproof. New piston in at 50hrs, valves haven't moved. Suzuki will be getting my money again.
To the OP...I'd go for the new YZF if you like it that much.

New! If you can afford a new bike...why wouldn't you? Not everyone can do it, so enjoy it if you can imo. Nothing beats a fresh bike.

My $0.02, get a used bike, tear it down to bare nothing, inspect and clean everything, replace what is worn, use the extra $$$ to invest in setup for yourself and to keep it running tip top.

Up to you.

I understand dealers have to make money, but I just can't justify the costs. I got my 2016 Yz450f late last year for $4200, and have maybe put $2k into into. I have a bike that is for the most part setup perfectly for me, that has a lot of life left in it, and I'm still out ahead over a new STOCK bike.

So, to each their own.

If your heart desires a fresh ride, go spend your hard earned money how YOU see fit for what makes sense for YOU and keeps YOU happy. In the end, that's all that matters.
