I am planning on getting another bike in December and last week there was no thought of spending the money for a new one....butttt the more I look at that 2019 YZ 250f the hardest it gets to resist. Last January I bought a 2017 kx 250f with 33 hours on it for 3k, I know I won't find that kind of deal again but I have seen some 17s for 4k. Is it worth paying double for a bike that has a few upgrades and fresh motor? What do yall think?
Do it! Spoil yourself! You probably work hard for your money! Life is too short! Pull the trigger! Go buy yourself that shiny new Yamaha and push that thing out of your dealership with the biggest smile on your face!!
The Shop
One bike that I wouldn't consider buying used is a KTM. Valves are basically double the price of Japanese bikes. I bought a 2016 350 (in Feb of 2017), had some issues...spent $500 to fix it, realized it was probably going to need valves at some point (probably cost in the $1800 range for valves, piston, and labor). I sold it and bought a brand new 2017. Haven't been happier with a bike purchase in my life.
Say you keep the bike for 3 years... if you get a 2017 now it will be worth maybe $2000 in 2020, so it cost you $2,000 out of that $4000.
If you get a 19 and sell it in 3 years, maybe it’s worth $4,000, so you’ve lost $3,000 out of that $7,000.
Maybe the difference is closer then you think and you’d be on the best equipment buying the 2019.
I purchased my 15 RMZ450, in May 2015. It had been owned by some total beginner who decided the bike was too much for him after a few rides. I paid £4500 for it and it was kitted out with all the bling and a full Yoshi system too.
Deals do pop up, just gota be prepared to be patient and keep searching like a hawk. Be ready for when a deal does come up as they go quick!
a new bike is $7500 with 0hrs
a used bike is $4000 with 100+? was it rebuilt? with oem? oil changed?.....
IF you buy new you get peace of mind and you can find some leftovers for good deals, i saw some 17-18 kx450 for 6k.
IF you buy used, you can find some good deals, about year and half ago i found a 03 yz250 with 15 hrs, for 1900, before that i had found a low hour kx124 2004 for 1k.
but i have come across a handful of used bikes that looked gtg but were basket cases 2 and 4 stroke alike.
most of the used bikes needed something done suspension wise, either because it was old and worn or was valved for someone else who was 50 lbs lighter than me. seats were crumbling, carbs were gunked, internals were worn out, broken clutch plates.
Pit Row
To the OP...I'd go for the new YZF if you like it that much.
Sorry, I am not able to do that.
Up to you.
I understand dealers have to make money, but I just can't justify the costs. I got my 2016 Yz450f late last year for $4200, and have maybe put $2k into into. I have a bike that is for the most part setup perfectly for me, that has a lot of life left in it, and I'm still out ahead over a new STOCK bike.
So, to each their own.
If your heart desires a fresh ride, go spend your hard earned money how YOU see fit for what makes sense for YOU and keeps YOU happy. In the end, that's all that matters.
