Concept 2 rowing machine for Moto.

Edited Date/Time 3/12/2018 8:45am
So my Doc at the Veterans hospital I see since being injured years ago has been on my ass latley about getting in shape.. I caught a peice od shrapnel and turned out I lost alot of blood and had blood pushed back into me in a dirty enviroment (Somolia).Over the last 2 years I went from 6'4 220lbs to 6'4 265 lbs..High cholostrol, blood pressure and diabetes runs in the family.I been riding every week trying to burn calories and the gain in weight is do to there meds they gave me..Very strong antibiotics that was retaining water..
I talked to Greg Hammond over at Concept 2 and ended up ordering a Concept 2 Rowing machine. I have a 3k treadmill that I cant stand using im bored of it in 5 minutes, im thinking the rower will be a little more entertaining and keep me at it.
Anyone have any insight on those rowers and how they liked them.I have a personal goal starting next week when I get that thing to be 230lbs by November and 220 lbs by Dec 31st. I can do it I know I will but id like to here some input on those rowers..Greg said he just got Dungey and Canard one and almost 50% of the pros are using them.
thanks

Started using one back in March along with my regular stuff. Helpful hint, put a tv in front of your treadmill and rower and you will be able to go longer distances.
Saw lots of improvements

Rowing is a really good method of exercise. My daughter was a rower through a club here, the kids that did it were in unbelievable condition. Their core muscles are almost as good as it gets.

I love my Concept 2 (it's a love hate relationship). It should really help you out as long as you spend good quality time on it.

they're a bad ass machine for mx. I use the one at my gym. I just throw on some headphones and then do some intervals.
I think it's the most intense piece of cardio equipment out there.
I'm sure Greg hooked up you.
racerxvt.com has some good routines for rowing on their site.

I was on the crew team in college and learned to hate those things.

Seriously, it's a great workout - but like anything, the more effort you put in it, the more results you'll get out. Good luck.

I am 46, 5"10, 180lbs. I just added an eliptical trainer to my growing collection (treadmill and stationary bike). While I am convinced the eliptical trainer is trying to kill me, it has done wonders for my track endurance.

However, I have had two different specialists/sport doctors tell me the rowing machine would be a better fit for me for MX. Nothing else works your upper back and sholders while providing that kind of cardio. So I am looking for a used one right now.

The TV advice is dead on. We added a TV to our exercise room with a DVR. Thats the room I record all my sports on. You feel stupid sitting on a machine just to watch the Nationsla, so you may as well work out!

The treadmill got to be dangerous. I kept leaning as I watched the riders turn. Not good.

I run, row and spin bike for as long as I can.

At the moment it's about 20 minutes jogging, 2km row at around 2min per 500m, and then spin bike for 15/20 Mins which has some sprints in it that normally occur on the chorus of a good song.

If I didn't have good music then I couldn't do have that stuff.

I've finally got the Nordic-trak knock off in the mail as we speak. $699 w/2 yr war & great reviews. Back in the day when I was ripped, it was all diet & rowing. Im gonna rig a pair of handlebars w/levers to the handle to simulate riding a bike. Put springs on the levers for resistance. You can do amazing things working abs, arms, legs, heart, w/ different motions once you get comfortable w/the machine. Hoping the handlebar thing will work! IMO, Best bang for your buck buy the minute you can do for gym time. You can race your best time: 4,000 meters in 30 min, whatever.
You will love it. I personally cant wait for mine cuz the holiday redbull/vodka has caught up w/my old a$$.
Happy New Year everybody.

Those concept 2 rowers work wonders for guys in this sport. Also great exercise too boot. I would say join the local gym and try one for a while , then purchase one for yourself if you think you may stick with it.

Btw.....thank you for your service , and I'm really sorry to hear about the shrapnel in your leg. This sounds like it's an ongoing fight with it still causing infections? Did they get the rest of the shrapnel out? I wish you the best man , and keep at it with the workouts!!

To add to what Destry suggested - try doing row / run combos.

500m row at 2 minute pace followed immediately by 1/2 mile run on treadmill at 7 minute/mile pace.

Try 4 sets with no break and see how you feel. If needed back off the pace so that you complete all 4 sets of row / run combos.

I have used this successfully for the last 3 years with moto athletes and soccer players( and myself).

After some time up the rowing to 1000m and the run to 1 mile per set.

I try to do a couple 30 minute rowing sessions per day. One in the morning and one in the afternoon at least 2 times per week. If I don’t feel good I do it slow if I’m feeling good I push pretty hard. When you hit 4-7 minutes you will think there is no way I can make 10 minutes. Just push thru and you will be surprised when you hit 30 minutes, sometimes you will be able to push thru 5 more minutes!

Thumbs up for calling it out. They must not have sold enough Concept 2’s for Xmas. Moto-heads all know it’s a great piece of gear, no need for this disingenuous bullshit. I hope the admins are paying attention. @jane nair (or whoever it REALLY is) should be clipped.

I bought one less than a month ago. I have since put 122000 meters on it and love it. I can feel getting stronger in key areas for mx. I see why all the top pros use them.

I used to use mine a lot, had some lower back issues for a few years, could not use it. I"m commited to using it again, just did 5k meters...I"ve got work to do! Of course all of us who already own one, are of no use to "Jane"

I got a Concept 2 a couple of months ago and wish I had done this years ago. I feel my first moto sprint is better and the biggest thing is it’s really helped arm pump and I have noticed that I’m stronger on my Mtn bike rides. Like Destry said “ I love to hate that thing”
