Broke mine for the first time Thursday. Doc says it should heal without surgery which I would prefer but my mind can't comprehend how. Anybody had a break like this without surgery? How was the healing process? I honestly got pretty good range of motion now I just can't lift my arm laterally.

Yeah needs a plate and a clean up, I've done both sides and needed surgery on both. And I don't know how he thinks that can heal naturally like that when the broken ends aren't even touching. You visit back yard doctor?

dont even try natural. unless you have nothing better to but waste time and money.

Get it plated. You'll be doing push ups and riding in no time. Been there, done that.

Mine was broke in one spot like your break on the right, and it healed fine, but yours looks destroyed. I’d be looking for another opinion and a new dr. Wow

Is your doctor an actual doctor? Specifically, a MD in Orthopefics? Pretty shitty advice if you ask me. That thing is displaced AF.

Do you have insurance? Plating a clavicle is about $5000 all-in.

Did my right collarbone twice this year. Have it plated asap. 6-8 weeks and you are back in action.

I just broke mine about 4 weeks ago. I'm not doing surgery but Looking at your pics, it looks a lot worse than mine was. I would defiantly get a second opinion.

Got mine plated the end of December. Recovery is pretty easy and I had already met my deductible so it was kind of a no brainer.

My insurance was billed $60k between the ER trip and surgery. Ridiculous.

This was mine last fall . The doc had to custom bend the plate because of previous break 25 years ago. I'm 56 and still not 💯 yet but back riding so all is good

Mine was separated similar to yours ends not touching. It did heal on its own however I wish I had pushed for surgery. Doctors were nonchalant and confident it would heal up fine and me not knowing any better went along with it instead of getting a second opinion. It works fine and feels ok but cosmetically it sticks out more than I'd like.

I yelled "Oh shit!" out loud as I scrolled past your X-Ray. I'm no doctor but I sometimes play an Esquire on an internet forum...

Yes legit ortho Dr. No idea what he was thinking but it looked sketch to me. I'm all for now surgery and waiting for it to heal if it will but I don't see how it can.

This was a specialist 😆 I'm a paramedic so I immediately knew I broke it. Called my insurance and got a list of local ortho docs and went to one. I couldn't care less about how it looks. It was already messed up from a 3rd degree separation previously I just want to know if it will heal properly without surgery. I got a solid recommendation for a doctor for a second opinion and I'll be calling for an appointment in the morning.

It might heal, but it won’t heal normal. Absolutely surgery.

Mine was broke like that and it was plated without question. Id talk to another doc and get it plated. FYI after the incision healed(2 weeks or so) i was back to normal.

I wouldnt listen to a doc that says dont plate it. Hes a hack for sure.

Racer142..... mine looked very similar to yours. Ortho took one look at the X-rays and scheduled surgery for that evening. He said if he waited a couple days the bone would be poking through my skin. Get a second opinion and surgery ASAP. I was back riding in about 8 weeks. Good luck and let us know what you decide.

Shocking but your orthopedic surgeon is correct and the vital experts are not. Collarbones are unique bones that are made up of mainly cancellous bone, like our skulls, they have the ability to heal themselves perfectly fine even when disconnected and crossed like that. Both the surgery option and non surgery option should result is a perfectly healed and functional collarbone. Cons of no surgery are cosmetic, you’ll have a bump. Cons of surgery can vary from, at best you’ll just have hardware and a scar, at worst you’ll have infections and require multiple surgeries. So your ortho is correct, you do not need surgery.

Mine looked similar. 1st ortho doc said if you asked 10 docs, 5 would say plate it, 5 would say let it heal. 2nd opinion ortho doc said plate it. Got it plated, got an infection, 7 surgeries later I'm left with no plate and a 31mm gap. Wish I'd had let it heal on its own. The whole ordeal dominated my life for 2 years and $20k.

Mine was that way but the doc grabbed my shoulders and put his knee in my back and pulled it into place. Ot hurt a little but worked great. This was in 1979.
