It’s starting to get cold in the northeast. What does everyone use for gloves?

My brother who rides a lot uses the over the bar mitts and 100% Briskers. I was looking at the Fly Windproof which seem comparable to the briskets and the Fly Title gloves which seem more like a winter glove.

I am looking at this more for mountain biking so I wasn’t looking to get the bar mitts unless I go out a lot in the cold and snow. I don’t like a thick pair of gloves between grips and palm and fingers. I don’t care how tight or bulky the gloves are everywhere else.

I searched the threads and found some 2011 and 2015 posts but I figured technology changes so I would ask again for 2021!

I just use some proper work gloves when it gets chilly, works surprisingly well

I put latex gloves under my normal gloves and run hand guards. Only downside is that you lose some feel with your grips but it works pretty good for me in winter conditions.

Can anyone compare legit winter gloves to running latex gloves under normal ones?

I've tried doing that on motorcycles and mtb. Problem I find with latex is my hands sweat like crazy then they freeze due to the sweat pooling in the latex gloves. Most legit winter gloves are way better than latex. I agree about the 100% briskers being really good. Also a two stroke pipe can be your best friend in the winter!

My rider was very picky when it came to gloves. He likes thin gloves and once when we raced Queen Town it was effing cold so i gave him a pair of surgical gloves which i use when oiling air filters.

He race with them under his regular gloves with no problem and protected his hand from the cold.

Surgical gloves come in a box of 100 and are cheap.

Novik Gloves out of Colorado. Thinner palms and windproof backs. Not for really cold or snow riding but good.

I ran latex/nitrile gloves under Mechanix brand gloves and that works pretty well.

Any gloves that are loose enough to fit surgical gloves under are not gloves I'd be wearing in the first place. If they are that loose, they will bunch and roll and cause blisters.

I solved this dilemma by moving to Arizona.

Moose heated grips, hand guards and use heat shrink on the levers . If it is really cold, hippo hands are in order.

I’m wearing TLD Swelter gloves in the cold. Since early last summer, I’ve been riding in the Eastern Sierra and during those rides have switched from TLD Air gloves to Swelters within a matter of minutes! Yup, I’ve gone from the heat of the desert to the cold of 10,000 foot mountains in a matter of minutes & it’s almost unbelievable that you can go from being hotter than hell down around Mono Lake & then be freezing your ass off up near Virginia Lake; but…”Been There, Done That!” And that’s even on bikes with hand guards!

Swelters feel & fit like normal gloves and are a helluva lot drier when the rain or “wet” snow falls. I’ve worn them on my Adventure rides and they allow me to use the touch-screen on my navigation system & phone…that’s handier than I can explain.

Bought some briskers, accidentally got the full waterproof ones and they’re kinda.l bulky for my tastes. And it doesn’t help that I bought them a size small figuring they’re gonna stretch like normal mx gloves-these ones don’t. Whoops

I've still got a pair of MSR Gortex gloves from 1988/89.

I always have them in my gearbag. But, as I use handguards all the time, thus reducing wind chill, I don't use them often - that's how they've lasted so long.

They can be fun and games to use, as you need to be careful when you take them off, to not have the Gortex lining come out of the fingers - it then can be a pain in the arse to get them on again - putting the Gortex fingers, back into the main glove fingers.

I most often use Silk Inner gloves for the cold. Minimal bulk, and really quite effective, and, incredibly comfortable. And, useful when things are really hot and sweaty as well.

I'm lucky to get in a few local rides a year in the snow, though it's pretty bloody minimal coverage of the white stuff at that. Yes, it does snow about 40 / 100 miles from the center of Sydney, a few times each year, but most Urbanites / Suburbanites are completely unaware of that.

Get a pair of hand guards. They block the wind. Heavy gloves are hard to ride with.

Scott neoprene gloves + handguards is a good combo. They're pretty thin for neoprene gloves yet warm enough with the handguards.

Thank you for all the responses. I found some briskers at my local shop and they feel good. I’ll try them this week.

I run the Briskers, they do okay. I had some older Fox cold weather gloves that felt better, but I think the Briskers insulate better.

Related question - I've been thinking about getting a MTB or road bike windbreaker, has anyone tried something like that? I'm tired of looking like the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man with all my layers...

I ride in cold weather a LOT, best thing that works for me no matter the gloves youre wearing is just go out and ride until your fingers are so cold you need to take a break because of it. Sit there until they come back, usually 5 mins or so for me, and then im good for the rest of the day no issues.

I dont know why, but it works every single time for me, hurts at first but then never cold again for the day. Also, tighter the glove the worse it'll be. I like the Fox Legion cold weather gloves; work well and also work on your phone for maps if thats your sort of thing. Good luck.

So rode with the swelters today, not a huge fan. Got the job done, but my hands were still damn cold, and there’s too much material on the palms for my taste, but they got the job done. Hands were going a little numb, temps were in the high 20’s maybe low 30’s for reference.
