You don't see too many pro's with holes torn in their knees either.

Back then riders wore the same gear every week, instead of one moto. Probably even went to the laundry and washed their socks and jerseys.

1982, 500cc, Southwick

As per Mike "Too Tall" Bell.

Richard

PS Mike relates the story of how he liked to hang out at the race shop and just BS whenever he had free time. At the very end of the season one year, the word came down that they were done with that years OW's and to destroy the parts. Mike remembers opening up crates of unused OW engines and driving a drift through the cases. Then it was Golf time. Brand new OW tanks lined up on the edge of the loading dock and driven into the parking lot with long handled sledge hammers. Yes, I cried when he told me this story.

Yep I remember walking next to Decoster at Saddleback back in the day, I asked him for his jersey and he said he couldn't because he only had two issued...Blink

"1982, 500cc, Southwick" - yes indeed ! 1st 500 national for the year, Howerton won, Bell 2nd (?)
1st year on factory Honda, 1st national Magoo did-not-qualify.
490 OW, power-valve , not production. Smith roll-offs "barely" production that year (?), Mike had them - pretty cool.
Wrenched the 500 nationals that year, Yamaha support rider Eric McKenna - great memories.
Two races later (Atlanta) Howerton broke his leg, Magoo won, Shultz 2nd and no dog-fight when Shultz past Magoo to win the 2nd moto. Danny really came around in 1982.
Cool "Classic pic" Lenny - thanks for sharing.
