Chopping the Throttle

10/31/2020 1:39pm
Back when I had my yz125, I would consistently feel a nose high sensation over jumps and feel the bike want to boner. I was told by a fellow rider that I should let off or chop the throttle prior to the lip of the jump. Is this just a 2 stroke thing?

Instead of worrying about chopping the throttle, just work on carrying constant momentum. Come up to the jump face faster so you’re not hammering the throttle up the face. The bike will naturally do it’s thing and avoid looping out. Once you’ve mastered that, then dabble with doing different things on jump faces depending on the situation at hand.

Chopping also puts holes in the faces of jumps, turning a regular jump into a dragon's back (broke a collarbone once from this).

I see what you’re saying. I think on the 125 I didn’t have enough momentum out of corners. Here is a little jump with me on the 4 stroke and my buddy on a 2 stroke, I Think the engine braking allowed me to level the bike out easier

Yep, it‘s a 125 thing. Don‘t do it on a 450.. you‘ll go over the bars.
But if you get front end high over jumps, try to adjust the suspension.

Use the front brake in the air. Drops the front end real quick

Change your body position, and that’s dynamic. Dont just stay in one spot

OP : Your body position is wrong, for the given jump situation/track surface. Practice, practice, practice and learn what works. The guys that ride bikes fast (esp. 125s) are not "chopping the throttle"

DONT CHOP THE THROTTLE! puts holes on the lips. just carry more speed and keep body center and roll off the jump if you can. If not keep the gas on and tap the rear break and back on the gas just before the back tire hits the dirt. Repeat repeat repeat

Yep. I’m on my 150 smoker 90% of the time and never once considered chopping the throttle on a jump, sounds like a scalded ape everywhere.
Lean forwards some, then go from there.
Brake tapping is one way but I don’t like doing it unless I have to. I’ve never approached a jump with the intent of doing so.

Don’t put your knees past the pegs, eyes over the handlebars and smooth throttle control. If you extend your arms in mid flight the front wheeIs coming up. Could be something your doing and not realizing it. Stay centered

You need to think about how you can go fast as possible in, through, and out of corners. The jumps will come together once the corners do. Improving corner speed is the number 1 thing to work on for MX. Everything flows out of that.
