Chest pro with shoulder protection

8/25/2022 6:03pm Edited Date/Time 8/26/2022 5:13pm
Now that the neck brace fad is nearly over, when are manufacturers going to make a chest protector with real shoulder protection? And not the so called shoulder protection they have now that actually sits on top of the arm at the shoulder, but on top of the shoulder where it would actually do some good.

I am just coming off shoulder surgery — bicep, labrum, and rotator cuff. Supposed to be cleared in a couple weeks. Really wish there was more shoulder protection available as I get back out there. Don’t ever want to go thru this again.

My boys ran the Alpinestars Bionic jackets and they worked well, I would go with one of these...

Take off the stickers/slap some of yours on, and you have proper shoulder protection. Multiple sizes and an exact splash off of the old Fox ones. The large even fits with my large Atlas. Rag dolled (you’re gonna die!) at GH on Saturday right on my bad shoulder (previous collarbone and AC problems), rode there today for the Thursday evening session: It does its job and has actual foam (like 1-1.5”) where it should. Two thumbs up from a long time user...

To be fair these are a good shout.

I can't wear one cos I'm already a big homie and I'd look like Shrek, I usually go without like an idiot or wear a Leatt 4.5 over jersey dealy, but I got my Mrs one of the Leatt versions of the protection jacket which she usually wears with the detachable elbow sections removed, so still decent chest, back and shoulder protection, and it's worked out well and has good coverage.

If you're interested in legit protection and not worried about doing things differently, they do seem a good option.

They stopped making it unfortunately.

Thanks for the replies. The TLD looks good but they stopped production. The body suits are too damn hot! There are a lot of protectors that provide front and rear protection-really good protection, but then the shoulders are not protected hardly at all. So we all are forced to make a choice between front and back or shoulder, but there really isn't anything that offers both in a high quality protector. You would think some of the major companies would see this-hell, at least one out of the dozen or so that make gear! It would be also good if these gear companies catered to the vet rider crowd a little more. I don't see why they don't. Lots of vets still riding out there. And they have the money to spend.

The only other alternative is to search for a good light weight set of hockey shoulder pads. Essentially that is what they were back in the 70's when JOFA was the only choice for motocross pads.

Check out the Alpinestars A-6. Has CE level 2 front and back with level one shoulders. You can remove the shoulders easily as well. I've been running it for a few years now and it flows plenty of air and is very comfortable under my jersey.

I just got this one in from RMATV. The shoulder protection is great and fits good under a slim fit jersey

I bought the A10...but take the shoulder off as I do wear a neck brace and it just didn't fit right with them. But the A10 is very similar to A6, but a different back and rib protection. I bought it for the rib protection after breaking 6 of them earlier this year.

The 1000 model still has the floating net system on the shoulders. This is great for impacts and you don’t notice even notice your wearing a chest protector. I hv a old fox one. Evs not sure if they make the neoprene shoulder brace but it helps to warm the shoulder up and keeps your shoulder in. Hrp has SoCal Mx pants made for them also. Only in size 36 and a Jersey for 19.95 looks great too. I don’t know why the fad went to under the Jersey . I think it looks stupid.

Just remember, like everything, technology has changed quite a bit on protection. A lot of the new CE certified stuff is not super obtrusive, but protects better than older technology that is big and bulky.

Love Alpinestar products. Had A-10. Velcro adjustment on shoulders allows infinite sdjustments. Could never find shoulder pad sdjustment that felt like home. Velcro was always coming loose. Velcro got caught with hydration system. Finally velcro had become worn and would not even stay set up. Went back to worn out HRP style. Works great.

The A-10 is very big and bulky and is meant to go over your jersey. The A6 is far slimmer and more comfortable.

I have an A10 and it would fit under a 1 size up jersey. I had the same issue with the shoulder pad velcro. I have the Bionic Action right now and it fits better and I don't need a 1 size up jersey. I was wondering how the A6 is. I like the idea of level 2 protection, and I would use the shoulder cups if they stay in place.

The A1 was just redesigned for 2023 and is now the A1 pro. Chest protection is upgraded from CE stone shield to CE level 1 for impact. I am also going to look at this once it hits the shops. I assume it will be super slim like the current A1.

To be fair, it's really hard to protect your shoulders in this sport. You might be able to protect from flying rocks, but landing hard on your elbow or your side will likely cause some kind of shoulder injury. It comes from impact or twisting forces transmitted through your arm, not necessarily what happens on top of your shoulder.
The only injuries I've had to my shoulders are dislocations, which all came from being contorted into weird positions because of crashes, not from lack of coverage.

Helps with hitting trees though. That is more of a hare scramble problem than an MX problem though.

If you had ever crashed hard enough wearing one to break the plastic you would understand. Hope you have a good doctor.

An updated A1 sounds nice. Of course I just bought one at full price 3 months ago.

You honestly think that saved your shoulder . From what exactly . ? Scraps ,cuts , bruises ,yea I can agree it helped u . Stopping breaking your shoulder blade . No way in hell . I wear a plastic one , always have . It has loads of great benefit s. But it's useless at stopping alot of injury s

The flak jack design is such a classic and I hope lives on forever.
