Cheap Lap timers?

Edited Date/Time 7/24/2020 11:46am
Anyone use one? Looking for a cheap lap timer to use at my house on the backyard turn track. Something battery operated maybe? Screen big enough to read as we go by would be nice as well. thanks!

I’m using a polar m430 and sync the data to my phone and using the lit pro mx app.

I’m more of looking for a clock to mount on a tree and it resets itself every lap. Thanks for the suggestions tho.

Same here. Im using a Garmin 735xt with the Litpro app. Its really really good & has definitely helped me get my lap times down. I actually heard about it on another post on here. So thanks guys for the heads up.

I done a quick review of the App & the guys at Gatedrop were kind enough to post it up.

That's going to be a pain to set up on the cheap unless you are real handy with electronics. You would need timing beacons and transponders to do it right, and a system to relay that to your timing board.

Wife, husband, gf, bf, your kid or a random kid with a smartphone will probably be the cheapest device you can find.

Use a cell phone in your boot with a track day app like Racechrono or Harry’s Lap timer.

I have successfully used the XT Racing lap timer that I use when I race sport bikes.

You could keep your eye out on eBay for someone selling the timer/transponder combo.

I think a timed display hooked to garage door sensors, or something like that would be awesome. I don't want to mess with lit pros and apps all the time.
It's a simple concept, so I imagine there's gotta be something out there. I started using a stopwatch app on my phone to time my kid, but it'd be great to have something easy to see while riding. If I come across anything that'd work and be cheap I'll let you know.

Go to the settings in the litpro app and connect your litpro account to your garmin connect account. Then you record a ride with your watch, sync the watch in your garmin connect account and it will show up in the litpro app.

I used it for the first time last night and it went pretty smooth.

Yes thats right. Plus, Make sure you select ‘Bike’ on your watch for it to record & transfer. It drops the first half a lap & last half so you prob need to do 3 laps for it to work properly.

Cheap lap timers? I don't know about cheap. Cheap isn't good, and good isn't cheap. What you need is a Mathilde...one of the better looking lap timers out there...but I think you have to be fast to get one. How's your speed compared to Marvin?

I'm not fast on a bike, but what can being fast at eating pizza and donuts get me?

A timing system that is used in ski racing should work but I have no idea about how to set one up or get one.

Being fast at eating pizza and donuts are qualities that can definitely get you a decent hybrid Italian/Merican lap timer...I just don't think it'll be the quality of a "Mathilde lap timer." Those are top notch, French-quality timers!

Do normal amateur tracks in the US have any sort of timing?
Here in Holland we use the mylaps transponder System which register laptimes during training (mostly) and races. sometimes even we have live timing over the internet

I think the biggest issue is getting it on a screen. There are plenty of options.

Your cheapest option was mentioned above. Have your buddy, kids, wife use their cell phone and keep track of lap times for you. Another option, which I use is my GoPro. If you know its around 2 min lap times, drag it along and get an idea. Dont watch the whole video. Yeah, I know a GoPro won't be as precise and can only help you get down to the second, but it's an option.
