Marvin's start, and the banter about it, got me to thinking.
In my years racing, I've seen many riders jump the gun, and get caught in the gate. I was wondering if it is the same small bunch of dudes doing it over and over, or does it happen to most riders from time to time?
As for myself, in all of the races I have ridden (probably 100-200), I never once hit the gate, or got caught in it. I was not generally a poor starter either. Of all my riding "skills", starts were my strongest point. I got many clear cut holeshots, and was ahead of about 80% of my competitors going into the first turn, on average.
Don't get me wrong, I'm no Mike Alessi, and I can remember a couple of times when I must have blinked just as the gate dropped, because it seemed like the other riders rear tires were going over the gate before I even moved.
What are you guy's experiences of getting caught in the gate? Ever?
