Just found these in an old photo album. Took pics of pics so apologies for the quality

Pre-season race (CMC?) at Carlsbad early 1987.

Crash happened right in front of us. First lap and a serious yard sale. RJ's chest protector ripped right off. Lucky he had some back protection on.

Is that Arnold and Haines in pic 4?

Yeah, I remember that, great pics. There was a TNN Hidden Heroes episode profiling Team Honda 1987. That race was part of the episode and I remember Brian Lunniss throwing RJ's busted Fox chest pro into the box van. But, he repaired it and Johnson won the consolation and the overall that day at Carlsbad.

Here's the video of the CMC race there. 250's at 18:15. RJ's crash is replayed.

Was that a regular CMC race, or was that a Commotion by the Ocean?

Awesome ! That was some great old school MX on a killer track. I don't think I've seen "ol Carlsbad much better than that. I always loved the way American Sports Cavalcade did their MX/SX coverage - especially Daytona SX, they always did a great job. I've always liked the announcers - Paul Page & Steve Evans even though they are auto racing announcers, they are real pros and always did their homework and did a great job announcing MX & SX.

While I still can't believe people used to do it and I really can't believe there weren't major injuries from it

but open face helmets and a race face attached to your googles looks so fucken cool

Edit: That said RJ looks cooler than any other person ever in that pic (next to #87)

How about this shot at 21:38 of Lechien with an open face helmet and no crossbar pad. Cringe! I loved watching those American Sports Cavalcade broadcasts as a kid.

Grape, #88 is Glover.

In the last photo you can see Kalos in the back on the #911 Yam.

Tommy Watts #24 and Ty Davis #11 out front!

Ah you're right, he was a rookie in '87. I was thrown by the #24 JT Helmet, but I was a couple years early

How about the Dogger showing up for practice with just a set of goggles.

Tommy Watts coming into the first corner like a Boss!

All I want to know is, who is XX on the Yamaha? You don't see that in the pro class these days.

Oh yeah, and in the 1st round at Adelanto Sunrise Park muddy/wet, Lechien either took RJ out or pissed him off big time.

At the end of the moto (that Lechien won), RJ rode up to him, tossed his own bike to the floor, and gave Lechien a big haymaker. No fullface helmet or mask to contend with, "Bad Boy" (RJ) jarred The Dogger's ancestors. Shocked

Yep, I was at that one too Ted722. RJ said that Lechein was brake checking him.

Sadly, it's the the same year/series where Bailey got hurt.

Quality is not too good on this one but note that we have more Cagivas on the line than KTMs.

What year was Commotion by the Ocean 2? I remember JMB crashing hard on the Carlsbad freeway and working from the back to almost take Mike Healy for the win.
I became a fan of Bayle that day.
Great race!

One of the most memorable Carnages at Carlsbad for me was I believe at the 87 Golden state series . 125 pro Scott Brown and Willie Surratt are battling for a few laps and here comes Willie with a good drive down the straight with the small drop off ledge that always got muddy before the first right had hairpin on the hillside and off goes Willie and tackles Scott off the bike . I don't remember exactly what the bad blood was from but it was definitely a payback move.

I thought that was payback for the Dogger taking Rj's little pit tootsie. Maybe I'm thinking about something else.
