haha and the fact that the KXF beat out the Honda, and YZF lol - superb handling? psshhh
Yup I currently have a 2017 KXF it to say it handles like a dream...yeah right... I rode a 2017 CRF-R and even though it was a brief ride and not setup for me it still handled better than the KXF which is setup Smile But each to their own eh? Smile

There were SEVERAL "Pre-Production" bikes in the very beginning...
I believe some of the media-launch bikes at Monster Mt. (?) were pre-prods?
I'd heard of a starting issue/kick-start-back-firing even causing "broken cases" at the kick-starter...?

Since then, I have personally beat the living shit outta 2 CRF-Rs & 2-RXs...in-fact, ML512 and I Roosted ourselves like a coupl'a angry-racers at Cahuilla on some RXs that were ridden for 3 days of media abuse. In Baja-Conditions I've pinged an RX for a few miles and it didn't even flinch.

I've not seen any problems but for -1- magazine blowing their's up and I'll reserve judgement on that...magazine guys...pfffft!

Note: I've seen virtually EVERY BRAND have a Bad-Day in the hands of "Magazine Guys"...even 2 strokes!

thanks for the insight Smile I was cringing a bit but have had zero issues now on 4 rides
You were there for 2 days of photos/testing and the Honda(s) were the single most abused, uh... I mean, ridden bike. One of our fellow testers was so bad that Micheal told me to "Go get on the CRF & don't hand it off until I tell you!"

Classic

On the other-hand, some old guy took off with the Husky for 45-50 minutes on our actual "Test Day". I have NO IDEA who that was, either!

Cool

guy on another website had his decompression pin break. Actually he said a cast weight? Anyway, he said Factory Connection broke it while testing suspension with his bike. Says they fixed it in house. Maybe MXA caught wind of it and that inspired them to a "rash of engine failures"

Typical MXA lazy writing

All new Gen bikes have their issues. That's why most people I know refuse to buy the 1st year of a new Gen. (See 2004 CRF250 valves, 2004 KXF/RMZ 250 water pump cover - engine grenades, 2009 CRF handling and crank seal issue, 2014 YZF engine and frame issues, etc....)

2009 crf450 also had auto decompression issues, and awful flame outs.

Seriously considering getting a new Honda. Now that the '17 CRF450R has been out for awhile any further information about "reliability issues"? Thanks.

2.5 hours on mine.(his) Zero issues so far. My son loves this bike. I'm really impressed from a mechanics standpoint. Typical Honda. Impressed. I rode it at Glen Helen for a few laps. Really impressed. Felt just like my '08. Felt right at home.

I've got over 12 hours on mine and the only issue is that I still can't buy aftermarket parts for it.

Anyone have any other problems with this? Just had my decompression pin fail on Saturday and I'm waiting on Hondas response.

I heard of one going a couple weeks ago, Wright's bike he's been riding down here. Not sure what went though.

What did it tear up in the process?

As far as I can tell, it simply broke the pin. I found the part, but the problem is it decided to break going up a jump face, luckily I knew what to do. The bike is at Honda now and they're trying to take out a bulletin on it to have it replaced. From what I've found, this is a problem Honda was having with the earlier made bikes and corrected it. Just figures, my luck!

Dylan's bike: no coolant (he's kinda fast and he needs to check, his coolant now and then). He overheated it.

I had no patience and bought one of the first 17's also. Just so I'm clear in getting the correct part, are we talking about the decompression plunger that failed?

There was 2 brand new ones at our little local race yesterday, both guys LOVED them... One off a CRF250 and one off a 16 KXF450. Both guys said bike was way better than their previous bikes.

I read the other day Keefer said they were doing a long term test on the new Honda, supposed to be in the June edition. I am very curious as we are going to buy a new Honda or KTM 450 this year....

Since they haven't replaced the part yet, I can't tell you what actually caused it. The decompression weight is actually the part that broke on mine. I should hear something about it today and I will let you know.

About 6 hours on mine and no issues yet, except for the throttle grip coming loose. I bought mine in march, hopefully that makes a difference for these other failure modes...

This was my only issue.
At 12 hrs the spring on the decomp failed. Causing the bike to not start, the e starter sounded like it was fighting the compression stroke so i had an idea what was wrong.

Got 17 hours on mine, 2 clutches has gone so far.
Spent a week in the Netherlands, and those days took a harder toll on my bike than a year in socal..
One clutch gave in from heat, i dont abuse my clutch but the springs were too soft, so i fitted harder springs, and then a clutch plate separated in three partsLaughing .
Its remapped and i have a yosh so its pretty hard on the bottom end.

Still, after having approx 30 breakdowns on my KTM last year in only 40 hours i gladly change my clutch every 10 hours, might even buy a hinson or rekluse...
The only thing i hate with the bike, are the useless POS forks... Thinking about swapping them for a set of air forks from -15 or -16 Woohoo

Well shoot, I guess I'll just hope mine is ok due to the fact that I'm pretty slow and easy on equipment! Haha

Interesting me and my mates bike (RX and R) have had no issues at all with clutches in the 25+ hours both have had...perhaps we have good ones?

What tracks do you ride? Probably 15 of these hours were on really heavy tracks like Lommel and such.
I rode two weeks on pala, lake elsinore, milestone and cauhilla and some other tracks, the difference in bike wear is huge.

well yes heavy tracks are always going to tax a clutch...have you thought about fitting a Rekluse?

15 hours on mine, only issue is the big smile in my face after riding that beast!!.........so happy with the bike......great motorcycle.

I m running hinson springs, but before the spring the clutch used to work very well, no issues.

Ride Red!!!.

This bike is mean. I came off a 2015 crf450, the forks on the 17 are night and day in comparison. The 17 bike handles awesome straight outta the box, feels light like a 250, power is smooth. Lacking a bit in the bottom range tho, will a Yoshi system help or am I wasting my money? Or are there other options. Im running a 50t sprocket. One thing though the clutch is noisy when in neutral ,( quiet when you pull the lever in) any1 know what causes that?

10.5 hrs on mine, not a single issue.

The only thing that was slightly annoying to me, was the low speed jerkiness.
(close to idle) going through the parking lot. Just installed a Yosh pipe, and a Tokyo mods remap. Completely smoothed everything out. One kick start, hot or cold.

To answer your question about low end power gains, I would have to question it, meaning I was asking myself that as I was trying it in all 3 different maps, maybe not so much. But then again, with how smooth the power is with those two mods, it's hard for me to tell.

Bike just flat out runs stellar for me!
