Hey guys.....

I was looking into getting a nice used CR 250 this next summer sometime as a good play bike / practice bike , but I have been thinking of scrapping that idea and maybe trying to get a CR500AF instead.

What is the handling like on one of these bikes when it's stuffed into something like a 2005-2008 CRF450R frame? Does the bike feel balanced? And I had heard of some people stuffing a KX500 motor in their bike instead of the Honda motor as well......have you heard of this?

I came across this bike on Craigs list >>>> http://www.vitalmx.com/photos/features/jeffro503s-album,1994/d74e5ef2ba…

And Holy crap! That thing gave me a woody like you wouldn't believe!

The bike is off of craigs list now , but randomly pops back up every couple weeks.

BTW.....feel free to post that pic in this thread if you can.....I've never been able to do it correctly.

Lots of happy CR500AF owners on this board. I know the Doc got swallowed up by his and I think he sold it. I don't think you would be hurt by trying one out. If you take care of it, they seem to hold value.

Who built that bike? It's obviously been rebuilt with lots of pretties and paint.

I saw that service honda is now doing the Kx500 in the kx450 frame. They also do a kx250 in a 250f frame which is what I am going to start building after the first of the year. From what I have read they handle amazingly well. Dont know if its due to the fact that your putting a liter motor in a frame thats made to have a heavier one or not.

They had this one and one done up in green to make it look kinda like a Kawi. From what I saw on the pics , it's at a bike shop in Oregon city called "Apex motorcycles , or Apex sports. The guy who had them both posted was named Brent. So if anyone was interested , they could give him a call at Apex and get the full details.

Is that just a sexy looking piece of MX machinery or what?? sheeesh....love that bike!

OH....BTW....to make it both more interesting and sexy. In the ad....both bikes were listed as just being built....and never rode! I think the original CRF450 was ridden by the looks of it....but since they were made into 500's....nobody has ridden either one of them!

Yeah, I don't think the dents on the swingarm are factory stock.

Yep, like Scottie says....still have it. Anyone coming to the Phx SX Ride Day can try to convince me to let them take it for a spin.

But let me point out that the actual Service Honda's are built on CRF250 frames, not 450's. When you ride one, the second thing you're going to notice is how amazing they turn. Much better than my 450....hell it's 15 lbs *lighter* than a 450!!!

What's the first thing you'll notice? Guess you'll have to come to Phx to find out.....

Here's a pic:

Whoops!!! That's *junior*.......here's the real thing:

Glad I made the right decision and held on to it!

I don't think you would be disappointed in it as a play bike. I'm not sure about a practice bike unless you need practice with throttle control. I guess it depends upon what you race.

They are extremely versatile motorcycles, they turn excellent, and a CR500 motor is like a drug. They make a really good single track bike, too.

Hey does anyone know who owns the 09/10 framed AF with the #2 on it? That bike is amazing. Or does anyone know if anyone is doing these coversions in 2009/2010 frames?

Looks like a bunch of trick parts on that thing. My guess is it was built by factory Honda. Kinda like the KX that Kawi built for RV.

seriously!?! You just sold your 450 cause you were getting hurt and now you want to buy a 500? I believe your point of not wanting the 450 is that you couldn't casually ride it and you found yourself getting hurt. Think you can casually ride the 500?!

Just bustin your balls a bit...but really.

You make a good point. The 500 requires a precision like style to ride it safely and effectively. Though on a two stroke, at least for me, you have a general idea of how fast/hard you are riding. A 450 not so much. I had way too many close calls on my 450 and ended up going back to a YZ250 a few years ago. The 450's are so easy to ride that it is easy to go get in over your head before you know it. Also, by no means am I comparing a YZ250 to a CR500. Just the two stroke aspect. You can get in trouble on either, but you know it sooner on a two stroke.

HAHA!!....it's cool Jeffro. I guess you missed my other post about how i couldn't handle it , and thought I was being a puss.....so i went and picked up a new 08' CRF450! Just feel more at home on the Honda's I guess.

I know , I know......

Seriously though.....one of those service 500's would be an awesome ride. And I am not thinking of getting rid of my CRF450.....but gathering up a service 500 as a 2nd bike maybe sometime later this summer. I never owned a 500 , but rode a few.....and from I DO remember.....it was one of the funnest times I had ever rode.

DAN......I remember Eric Cleavland. I didn't know he was working for Apex. Doesn't Dennis Sweeten own Apex? he owns H&S drywall as well , which shared the shop with Apex. Dennis was also a top 5 national trials rider for years. Let me know if you find out anything on the white CR500. I couldn't afford it now anyways , but it would be worth the drive down there to just slobber on it! HAHA!

Ha! Yep, guess I missed that one!

I believe you have set a record for the quickest turnaround from selling and giving it up to getting back into the saddle again, and now a second bike for good measure!

Good luck man, to be fair I agree with you, the hardest thing for me to do is not think about racing/getting race ready. I have to force myself to just ride for fun, it is a conscious effort I have to go through each time I get on the bike. Being perpetually out of shape helps a bunch!

Jeffro: Try this site. bannedcr500riders.com. Build one yourself. Or make the mistake I did because I was too busy working and pay someone to mod your frame and then pay a friend to straighten the whole mess out. Be forewarned. This site is addictive and you can learn a LOT from a bunch of stand up guys.

Ahh, the CR500. The perfect spode bike for old fucks. Put your beer gut on the tank and hold it wide open down the straights. Don't forget to slow down to 1st gear in every turn because you don't know how to ride for shit.

Also, don't forget to blow out every rut and berm on the track because you can't stop. 500's are perfect for that. The 450 riders might be jealous of your berm-blowing-out skills because that job is reserved for them and there polished swing arms.
