Buying used: what would you buy?

5/18/2018 12:06pm Edited Date/Time 5/19/2018 3:40pm
I’m in a debacle. I’m looking to purchases a used 250f. Scary I know. The two bikes I’ve narrowed it down too are a 2017 ktm 250sxf with 23 hours on it, was raced a few times but maintained well. The other is a 2016 yz250f with unknown hours but estimated by the owner to be around 40-50 (I’ve seen the Yamaha rider ride and he isn’t riding on the top end so I’m ok with the hours) Both bikes are stock. The ktm is priced at $5300 and the Yamaha at $4000. Both run and were kept up on with general maintenance. Based one experience and price, what would you go with and why?

I would go with the KTM. The motors seem to hold up really well (I've got around 60 hours on mine with no issue...ridden hard).

I believe the YZ450Fs are super dependable, but not sure the 250F has quite as a good a reputation. I would buy a 250 2 stroke too if it were me, would cost less and buying used is not nearly as scary, more power and much cheaper to maintain over the long haul.... 06 or newer YZ 250 has the sweet SSS suspension, great power band and seem to be very reliable.

I just bought a 16 Yz250f with 50 hours and the frame was cracked so check for that lol. Yamaha warrantied it and I’ve put 15 hours on it in the last three weeks with no issues. Also had a fresh topend before I bought. Absolutely love the bike.

That’s the way I’m leaning. Cost a bit more but the electric start and air forks sound like a nice luxury to have. Plus the low hours gives me peace of mind

Why buy used, when you can buy a new current bike for less money. The ktm is almost 2 years old already. Used 250f. Rollin the dice. Zero hrs on a new bike is peace of mind.

If I could buy a cherry, bone stock 1996 Honda CR250...I'd do it. I'd fix the suspension and race it stock in the smoker class. They were super fast & were build tough as hell.

As others have stated....if you can get within a 1000 bucks of what you want to spend on used by buying a cheap new holdover....it's a no brainer. Virgin or drilled out slut...your choice. You buy used when it's some sort of vintage or you're silly enough to think a cheap used bike is gonna stay cheap. It's your money but don't say you weren't warned.

I guess with either bike, a leftover 2017 250sxf is still high 6000s low 7s and at 5300 with 23 hours it’s definitely appealing. (Just a partially drilled out slut) the Yamaha makes me nervous knowing there isn’t an hour count on the bike. Bone stock and I know the rider didn’t abuse the bike and rode it relatively easy. I think buying used, it gets overlooked sometimes. Great way to save money but again to your point it can be a great way to spend a shit ton more.

Get a tuner for the yzf,. See if the owner is truthful. $5300 for a used 250f is way to high. You are crazy if you buy either. Imo. New is new. I wd buy a new rmz 250 before those 2 used bikes.

23 hours on the rev limiter is hard on a bike brother. I've bought a couple of used race bikes ONLY because they came with receipts for new top and bottom ends and the shop confirmed the work. Plus lots of aftermarket goodies. It's all a crap shoot. Good luck.

Depends how big you are, how fast you are, how much you ride, and how much money for future spending.

it's already been said. 5k for a new 18 kx250f is what you need to be looking at. unless of course you don't want green. there all good bikes but it boils down to what you want. get what you want. you won't be any faster or slower because of the color of the bike tho.

I am not one to buy used bikes. But come on people what are you guys do with your new bikes when they have 40+ hrs on them? do you just chuck them in the dump? We should be encouraging guys like Michael_stanley to buy our used bikes so we can keep buying new ones.

Buy the cheaper one and spend the balance on a good English tutor. Wow.

The issue with a used bike is you don't know the maintenance of the bike or how hard it was ridden. Unless you know the person & the bike that's for sale. Have owned 6 450's with most of them being left over models or almost new cond. with extremely low hrs.. With the exception of a new 18 model since I couldn't find a low hr. one for a reasonable price.

Below is a good example of what I'd buy when looking for a used 4T.. Not a Zuk fan, but would be a good candidate for someone who is.

This for sure. See if your dealer would loan you one or a friend will. They plug in and you can check how many hours exactly.
