Buying used - what are your pet peeves?

Edited Date/Time 11/6/2013 12:10pm
What are some things that wouldn't prevent you from buying a used bike, but that piss you off just the same?

Mine:
1) Renthal Chainwheel stickers (or similar) vulcanized to the swingarm

2) Mismatched bolts

3) Chewed up pre-load adjuster

Yours?

"never raced" in an ad description.

Oh, so you are just a dirt lot riding retard who never did any maintenance, or has any clue about taking care of a MX bike?

Sold.

Its a long list, but painted plastics and metal mulisha stickers are close to the top.

Hate bald tires, sprockets that look like saw blades, and stickers plastered all over everything.

Dust in airbox bugs me. So does unproper oil changes.... and low compression.

I can use shitty parts on a bike to talk em down in price and fix it myself later, but I hate when I know the engine isn't immaculate.

Straight from the start, I hate it when people try to bullshit me. Like if it's obvious that something is up or blah blah...

I've always maintained my bikes and well... so when someone starts saying something retarded I can't wait to get the fuck outta there...

If there has been an issue, just fucking tell me. If it has been sorted, sweet, prove it. If it hasn't at least let me assess wether I want to take that risk or not. Just people being bs dickheads really.

Great thread. Apart from the actual bike, the next thing is the actual seller.

I know this will make me sound like a snob, but when the seller can't even begin to spell.... that's definitely one of them. I could go to ebay right now and list a dozen examples. Not saying I'm wonderful in that regard either but when someone isn't even competent, then not only is the ad frustrating to decipher, but you also get the impression (perhaps wrongly) that they may not know shit about the bike.

The other is when the seller insists the bike is "MINT!!" and "LOOK @ THIS STUNNING BIKE!!!" when the bike clearly isn't anywhere near mint. Even more funny when the same people aren't open to offers... "No dreamers or silly offers please".

How about when they tell you it's fast? I see this more for street bikes but it does make it's way into motocross ads, too. And really any of the other buzzwords like "built" "monster edition" "gone through" "carb needs cleaned" or when they give you the mph it will reach in a quarter mile...for a motocross bike. Thanks but no thanks.

I'll throw this in there but it's the other way around. My pet peeve is when some woodchuck shows up to look at the bike you're selling and twists the throttle 6 times like it's a 2 stroke. Then you have to explain to them that the bike isn't going to start.

Any sticker kit or mismatched plastics.

When they try to tell me it only has 20 hours total time, I get there and it looks more like 220.

Not washed.
If they won't go to the effort to wash it to sell, it makes me question how often they performed routine maintenance.

"IT'S FAST!".

Ohhhhh forgot when they tell me it has a new powerband. Lol
Also had a seller on the phone with another guy who. He was trying to buy a quad from. He kept telling the guy yeah the guy is right here as son as he pays me I will run down and pay you. Too bad he completely misrepresented the bike on line. Also it was dark when I got there and he insisted on rolling the bike out in the dark drive way for me to look at it instead of in the garage with lights on.

When they tell you the bike has only 5 complete hours on the bike and the piston ends up being crackedBlink And it seems like every used bike I buy needs new fork seals and tires

When people lie about the year - it's unbelievable how many people I call out on their "2006" cr 125 actually being a 00-01... Actually happened yesterday.

It's supposed to be dirty, it's a dirt bike.

Everything is fresh... Get there and the linkage is as sloppy as the guys girlfriend and the fork seals are leaking.

Basically I hate buying used bikes. I do, but I get nervous every time.

black plastic

"good tires"

Monster stickers

and most of all

"never raced" which to me means never maintained

I usually just keep looking when I see any of those things

I see more misspelling in dirt bike ads then any other ads haha.

-Blacked out/mismatched plastics
-Aforementioned stickers welded to the swingarm or frame.
-Mismatched parts from other bikes that CLEARLY do not belong on this one. Case in point, my buddy bought a used YZ125 last spring, the silencer was from god knows what, and there was about a 3 1/2 inch gap from where it met with the expansion chamber. Previous owner's solution? Garden hose and 2 hose clamps.
