Buying a new chevy silverado and need help

Edited Date/Time 8/20/2014 9:02pm
Here's the deal I have a 2002 chevy extended cab with a regular bed that I sold. I am going to buy a new 2015 chevy Silverado (its the same as the 2014). I am going to get the short bed, not the regular bed, will a bike still fit with the tail gate shut on the short bed or will it need to be down. On my old chevy I would tie the bike down on the left side of the bed and swing the rear over so I could close the tailgate, does anyone have any pictures of their bike in a short bed? I don't really want a motogate or bedextender....thanks! Just not sure if I should get the regular bed or the short bed.....tough decision, I only use the bed for hauling my bike really.

Tailgate will still shut if you put the front wheel in the front corner of the box and then slide the rear wheel over to the the bed rail.

Man that is a horrible thing to have to worry about...I wish which new truck was my biggest concern haha..I'm jealous. I say....take your bike to the dealership and try it out. they should get a kick out of that.

An '06 CRF450 fits in both a '96 Chevy short bed and a '01 GMC short bed.

I don't know if the dimensions on beds or bikes have changed since.

+1 on what MotoMike said. Crew cabs have a shorter bed than the typical short bed. Not sure if you're getting a crew cab or another extra cab.

2012 chevy crew with standard box. The tailgate shuts with the bike at an angle...

FWIW, my mate's got a 2012 Silverado Crew Cab with the short bed and can fit his bike in diagonally with the gate shut. Any more than one bike and he's gotta leave the gate down. I got the Ext Cab Silverado with the long 8ft bed and LOVE it - will never have another truck without it.

Cheers

Actually you can get a crew with the standard box and that will work. The only one that won't work is the true short bed which is only available with the crew. There are 5 combinations on the new trucks that are explained pretty well in the link I provided.

I keep my bike straight and then just hook a tie down from my foot peg to the hole in the tailgate by the strap that connects to the truck. This keeps the tailgate up so nothing slides out yet still have all the room in the tailgate and don't have to buy the bed extender thing.

I have the 2014 Silverado extended cab and the bed is longer than my 2012 Silverado extended cab. My buddy has the 2014 crew cab Silverado and you have to put the front tire in the front corner and angle the bike sideways to be able to close the tailgate.

On a side note. the new Silverado's are fantastic. I haven't been this happy with a vehicle since my first moto van! I gotta show mine off:

This is my set-up. It's the double cab, which is a glorified extended cab. That gives me the 6 foot box, not the 5'5" that comes on the quad cab. I still cannot put my bike in straight and close the tailgate though. Like mentioned above, put two full size bikes in, place the gear bags in the middle and run a tie down through both wheels and the gear bags. Nothing will move!

congrats on the new purchase, bro

i would go for the Ford Ecoboost, but that's just because i love mine, the Chevy is a badass truck.

as for bed size, I have the regular size bed and without my bed tool-box, i can fit my bike in with my built in bed extender. honestly, if i would never buy another truck without a bed extender, they are just too valuable in my eyes.

I'm having the same dilemma. I currently have an extended cab (now called double cab) with a standard bed and it's perfect for hauling bikes. I would like a crew cab (extra interior room would be nice with kids), but I'm not sure about the short bed. I was considering the crew cab/short bed option with a motogate or something similar. I usually have 2 bikes in the bed, so I typically have the tailgate down (or at 45°) anyway. I'm still not completely sold on the short bed.

And, yes, Chevy/GMC now offers a crew cab with standard bed which is great. Unfortunately, I don't have room for the extra length in my garage.

How about some bike/truck photos from you guys with short bed pickups. In the end I will probably end up with another double cab, but the crew interior sure is nice.

Micro bed is only 5 1/2 foot. Standard short bed is 6 1/2 foot.

I want a 7 foot bed, the perfect size. Bikes would go straight in and the gate will shut perfectly. My Ford Super Duty is 6 3/4 foot and will close with most bikes straight or barely bumped sideways.

i had a 2006 Ford F150 Crew Cab with the short bed and i could easily haul 2 bikes with the tailgate down.

my current bed is the Crew Cab regular bed but I have the toolbox, so technically it's again the short bed. with my bed extender, I can still easily fit 2 bikes and close the bed extender so the cans, bags, etc don't go rolling down the freeway.

Based on my own experience and from what everyone stated in this thread, it breaks down like this:

Quad Cab w/ 5.5 foot bed = 1 bike tailgate up w/ bike at a 45 degree angle in the bed. 2 bikes straight but tailgate will be down

Extended Cab w/ 6.5 foot bed = 1 bike tailgate up w/ bike at slight angle or straight w/ tailgate propped up (but not fully closed). 2 bikes, same thing. Also straight w/ gate propped up.

anything with the 8 foot bed option can have enough room for bikes and a midget mosh pit going on back there with tailgate closed.

Note that some Quad Cab trucks now have the 6.5 foot bed option. I know Ford/Lincoln does, not sure about the new Chevy's though. Also, on the 6.5 foot bed some of my buddies can fit two bikes in with tailgate fully closed if the front wheels are turned in toward each other.

My Sierra has the short bed but I always have two bike on the truck so I never attempt to close the tailgate, anyway. I have a Moto-Gate, so I don't really worry too much about not being able to close the tailgate.

I have the 2014 Silverado 1500 true Crew cab with the Standard bed. In 2014 they started offering the crew cab with a true 6' bed or about there in the 1500, before that it was the short stubby one or move up to the 3/4 ton. I can get my bikes in there and pitch it sideways to get the tailgate shut just fine. Front wheel at the front of the bed tied down and my back wheel swung slightly sideways. If you want to eliminate the sideways swing all together, have to go to long bed.

yea. it fits sideways. you can also put the bike in straight but loop the tailgate straps around the guides (i guess thats what they are) and the gate will be like halfway closed. ***Disclaimer. Red chain was temporary until my other came in***
