The best savings is a 6 month to 1 year old used bike

Used is a crap shoot, if it's super clean. A new leftover won't be much more. Buy new, no risk

When you buy new, inevitably you loose a couple of grand the first time it rolls over dirt.
The smartest investment is buying one that only has a handful of hours on it (4-5) and you won't have to suffer the initial loss in value.,

Rolls over dirt? More like, rolls up ramp into your truck.

Then keep it for a long time. A lot people sell their bike like in two years for the newest model. Of course you’re gonna lose money that way.

I buy new and aim to keep long term. Don't care if I lose money or if I'm getting screwed over, ect. I love that the bike is mine and mine only and I know its history from day 1. And nothing beats the feeling of rolling a fresh one right out of the showroom. If you can swing the cash (or dare I say finance for all the Dave Ramseys on the forum lol), I'd say go for it. I've had friends buy pre-owned 2016-2017 bikes and still be troubled with issues... When I buy a new bike, if it turns out to be a headache the only ones to blame are the dealer/manufacturer and hopefully they would make it right. Pretty much the only scenario in which I'd buy a used bike is an older two stroke as a project to trick it out and have fun with it.

Be careful if you buy a Honda or a Yamaha out of state.

I bought a 2014 CRF450R in November of 2014 in Ohio. I did use Honda Financing to get it out the door but I paid no tax. Basically 3 years to the day later I get a $900 bill from the North Carolina Department of Revenue including tax on the full amount (I paid much less), interest an a penalty.

I called the finance guy up there and asked if they had heard of anything like that before...he was like..."do you live in North or South Carolina? Was it a Yamaha of Honda?." He said he thinks the buyers info gets out when they send off the warranty stuff.

I bought a 2017 KTM350SXF in Tennessee this summer and paid no tax. I did pay cash on this one so we'll see.

Sport Cycles in Rockingham NC sells a TON of Kawasaki 250s & 450s for basically nothing. Look them up and give them a call.

Amen. I bought a 2016 KTM 350 that looked pretty clean...was basically a POS. The previous owner did a lot of dumb stuff (broken spoke, broken EFI lamp, pulled the map switch cable out). The fuel pump went out on it like the second time I rode it. Sat in the shop for 7 weeks. Cost $500. While in there they adjusted the valves and it started smoking after that. Sold it and got my money back out of it.

1 month later KTM had a $1000 rebate and I bought the bike I'd been wanting for years.

I paid a lot of money for my 350 but its perfect and I'm keeping it for a long time. Every time I put a wrench on it I won't be worried about backing out the previous owner's heli-coils or finding some other dumb shit they rigged up and forgot to mention.

Man I hear you on the previous owner BS... Get you a vintage bike from the 90s and let the fun begin! Laughing

Are these leftover deals just word of mouth and calling/clicking random dealers or
are there search engines and OEM links for it?

I've did it before; but it was over a decade ago and word of mouth.

Check websites, call around. Rebates and deals are posted online. And of course it helps being a loyal customer.

You would be surprised of what's sitting on the shop floor , that " Isn't " advertised. If it's a bigger shop , they'll have too many to list. I know the shop I go to has an annex building about 1 mile from the shop itself , which stores about double the bikes that the shop does. Most all those bikes already have price tags on them , new and used , and just about every brand on earth is in there.

To me there are 2 types of bikes you can buy: brand new bikes, and project bikes.

Unless you know and trust the previous owner or want to flip the bike, or want a project bike for the fun of working on it, buy new.

What do they have 250Fs for?

I'm seeing $5998 at my dealer.

I hate buying used bikes. Every single time there are mechanical or electrical surprises. I HATE finding stripped/rounded fasteners.
my 2010 YZ250f is still in great shape, it`s only been me or the only guy I take my bike to that has worked on it... I never feel like the bike isn`t capable enough for me even though it is almost 8 years old now... It`s due for a suspension rebuild and a valve check but that`s about it.

Just bought an 18 yz250x, was still in the crate, makes me happy... I pull new bikes down to the frame and lube/torque everything anyways.

If I knew the previous owner of a 1 year old bike, I would consider it depending on how good of a friend that person is.

Used bikes area bit of a gamble, you get a good one and hit gold.

Or spend most of your time sitting around repairing it at the side of the track which is a severe ball ache and waste of time.

If you can get a good price on a new one then that's the way to go.

Just do your homework. You'd be surprised how many dealers likely have leftover 17 models; a local dealer near me quoted $6400 OTD for a 2017 RMZ450, which has the garbage front forks but still new.

"My dealer $5999 plus tax 17 450 kawy. New.".....

That's a good deal on a new 450. Care to share the dealership name?
