Buying New or Buying Year Old Smarter These Days?

I use to buy a new motorcycle every 3-4 years. But know that a KTM runs about 11K for 2019, I'm really weighing on buying a year old or even 2 years older on Craigslist or left overs in dealers.

The question I have for all, seems a 1-2 year old bike instantly drops anywhere from $1k-2k.

Is the "new" justified still with how reliable bikes are now? Plus previous owners pays usually for all the aftermarket items as well.

Your thoughts?

You can get a new 2019 KTM for 11k, a new leftover japanese bike for half that, or a 3-4 year old used for not much less than the new leftover japanese bike.

Personally I prefer new bikes, just because I know how it is maintained from the start. There are VERY few people who I would trust to work on my bikes, so I'm always hesitant to buy used unless I am looking for a project bike. Race bike, I always buy new.

around here its best to buy a vet riders year old bike they dont ride them hard, and they put around twenty hrs on them i should know im 55 and about to sell my 18 crf with around thirty hrs on it and its never hit the rev limiter and never been in fourth gear

You can get a new KTM for $9k OTD here. Japanese bikes $200-$300 less. Not sure where these wild $11k comments come from.

Depends who you are buying from. If someone posted a 19’ 350 with 5 hours on it, id buy it right away. Hahaha. Also depends if you are paying cash, credit or finance I guess.

I've had good luck buying leftover bikes. The current year bikes drop once the new bikes are released. I paid around 7k out the door for a 2017 yz450 last year. Ill then sell it in a few season for what I owe on it and then start the process again. Yea it sucks always having a 150ish dollar payment, but I always have a fresh bike and don't typically have to worry about big dollar repairs. Just change oil and air filters and ride. Most people spend the same amount every month on cable or a cell phone.

yet again in the North east I see 1-3 year old bikes with low hours selling for almost half of what they were new.

Buy a new bike from the previous year. Big savings and you won't have to worry about how it was maintained compared to a 1 year old used bike from some random guy.

If you have money and no time, buy new.

If you have time and not as much money (or are a cheapskate) buy used with less than 20 hours. More than 20 hours means they have had a chance to do a shitty job maintaining the bike.

If you want to save money then buy a new leftover if possible. I know in PA if you're looking for a husky TE300 or KTM 300 XCW you probably won't find a new left over.

You wont find any left over 300s of any kind in Washington. I bit the bullet and bought an 18 TX300 and its the greatest thing since sliced bread. That said, you WILL pay for it lol.

You can find some TX and XC models left over in PA. I just saw a brand new left over 2018 TX 300 for sale for $7500 at one of the dealers here. That's a hell of a deal and if I hadn't bought a new husky a few months ago I would jump all over it.

Just asked a dealer in Northern California & got this... (Fator's Suzuki/KTM/Husqvarna in Redding)

If my math is correct, that's about $7,300 with tax in CA.

Yup. Seen some under 10 hour bikes here. Owner spent more time applying graphics and stuff than riding. And the prices are low.

I wouldn’t say new four stroke are reliable. I have seen a lot of people pushing their bikes because of electrical issues.

I don't buy any bikes new. It seems silly to pay twice what I could pay for a gently used one year old bike.
Let somebody else pay the rent for that massive dealership.

I bought my 2016 yz250f in 2017 for $5500. If it blew up I would still have a good bike with a brand new motor for less than a brand new bike. Just use good judgement, most people that are selling a bike are not trying to screw you, and already tried to maintain it to the best of their abilities.

California charges "Use Tax" when you buy out of state and register it here. In California all off road vehicles need to be registered even to simply transport them in the back of a pickup truck.

It's the California way. Nothing is free here. I had to pay back taxes and fees because the sticker on my 1985 Honda ATC was two years old. It was about $250 to register it.

My dirt bike on the other hand was never registered by the original owner before me, I'll never take it to the desert, and I also don't want to have to pay $1000 for a sticker to ride a bike on private land in America. If I go to the desert I'm going to try to find a 450 that I will register.

I was 7600 OTD for a left over 17 in Denver. That said, The fucking 10-20 hour Craigslist bikes were still in the 7s, and new, well, might as well slap your kidney on the table too. Colorado prices are off the charts, unless you want an RMZ, then you can pay with arcade tokens.

Buy a leftover thats a year or two old from a dealer or if you’re weary of buying a used bike look for one on here

How is buying a new bike even a split second decision? I couldn't agree more. Everyone on here couldn't ride the Zook to its full potential, it's got great handling, great motor, and decent suspension. Plus every other OEM would have to lower their overpriced bikes. I'm a Yamaha guy through and through but I'm not so attached to any brand, bike, truck, tools, etc. That I'd pass on a great deal. My God people, do you all have money to burn? Did you believe the government when they said if they ran health care it'd be cheaper? If so, I've got a bridge in Brooklyn for sale cheap-
