Buyers Remorse on Expensive Gear

Hey Guys...

Recently I just picked up for myself on my birthday a Bell Moto 10 and a pair of Tech 10s. I am having a little bit of buyers remorse on the purchase considering it was north of $1600...
I am a casual rider and I am wondering if I should return them for less premium gear options like a pair of tech 7s and a plain Shoei-vfx Evo.
I would love to wear the highest end stuff on the market but I'm just not sure if its worth it.
If I were to crash hard in the Bell moto 10 ($900) I could not afford to replace it because I don't got it like that.

What do y'all think?

Get a 6d and some SG12s and you're better off for less money. You're welcome

Live under your means. Put away money for the future. Enjoy your life.

These things are not mutually exclusive.

Absolutely. Gearne's are better anyways.

Get on MXLocker or something and get some worn 3-5 times boots for 350 and swap your lid for a plain shoei, which is also better IMO. This is world class equipment. I use it.

Unrelated, the Thor Pulse line of gear is better than most 'high end' gear sets and wears really well. I have gotten sets for right at 100 dollars and it's the best gear ive ever worn.

More money = more riding trips, better suspension (more fun), or whatever else. Top tier gear is a scam, change my mind.

You only have buyers remorse because it was probably more than you should have spent

But

You already spent it - go and break it all in and you will feel 100% better.

Helmet you should really wear what fits good. I wear the fly formula. They have some great cheaper options in that helmet with great protection, probably half the cost of the bell. Boots again you need what fits you best. Tech 7’s are a great value and super comfy. Plenty protection for. Casual rider.

Tech 7s are great. You don’t need tech 10s. I have both and like them equally.

That’s a good point…

I wear SG12s and TLD Poly SE4s most of the time (track days and off-road/trail riding).

For all of it, I paid less than what most people are paying for their Astar 10s.

It’s your birthday and you have probably wanted those items for a while. Don’t feel bad and enjoy your new gear! Unless it was your rent/mortgage money, then that’s a different story.

If you haven’t worn the Tech10s then I would return them.

It’s been well documented that they don’t last very long for a lot of users.

Thank you for all the replies,

I am a 25 yo Civil Engineer who doesn't race but is a dirt bike and mtb hobbyist these days. I ride a 03 yz125 but wanting to upgrade to a yz250 next year.

For those recommending SG12s.. I am a tall lanky guy with skinny feet . I have heard in the past that SG12s are pretty wide, I guess I would need to try one on.

I currently wear a pair of tech 10s that my dad bought be back when I was still racing before college in 2017. They are now just falling apart. But since it is now my dime that is why I am considering downgrading to tech 7s.

my previous helmet was also a Shoei but I was open to trying something different. I'll have to look into the 6D.

Any thoughts on the alpinestars supertech m8 or m10?

In this case, try the SG10s and if that doesn’t work, try Sidi.

Good luck!

If you want the best ankle protection keep the 10s thats for sure, no other boot on the market has the same support of a tech10.
Ive not tried the moto 10 but a few of friends have them and find the massive vents in the front pack with mud and allow dirt inside the helmet

Return the boots if still new. I personally prefer instincts. I can get about 4 years out of them vs a few hours out of tech10’s. Tons of people prefer the sg12 and 10, along with the sidi bc the soles are replaceable by the user. Sg12 and 10’s along with sidi hold up longer then any Astar boot also.

Try not to get too caught up in buyers remorse. Yes it’s a lot of money to spend, but take care of them and they’ll last you a long time. Regarding the astar helmets I had no luck with them but everyone’s head shape is unique. I’ve had shoei, 6d atr1 and 2, moto 9 and 10, and an m10. Ive decided the atr2 was best overall for my head shape, build quality, cost, and protection level. Your mileage may very. Either way best advice I got - enjoy the items you buy with the money you earned!

Yes and overpriced in my opinion for the weight and build quality

Do you need a carbon helmet and top-tier boots... maybe not but I wouldn't regret the purchase unless you straight up don't have the money and put it on a CC or something like that. I personally like the Tech 7's better and they're cheaper but pretty much all my friends that broke their ankles, heels, or tore their achilles all get the Tech 10's afterward so it should give you peace of mind.

Good gear especially when you throw in knee braces, jerseys, and pants can definitely add up but I think it's worthwhile and I always feel better on the bike when I'm wearing better/ more protective gear. For me, I don't feel the need to have a full carbon helmet when a Fiberglass with MIPS or equivalent does the trick and usually a couple hundred less. Same with boots, of course, Tech 10's are better but Tech 7's are good enough for the majority of riders and a couple hundred less. I don't like the old school styled SG-12' personally but they are good boots

My .02,
Wear the gear you bought, you wanted it, youll use it all the time even for a trial ride and you will take care of it better
then second third choice stuff that you may not like or wear....

Buyers remorse only happens when someone cuts the check, then figures out they actually couldn't afford it... life lessons... they just keep on giving...

For what its worth, I tried to replace my Tech 10s with 7s and after one ride I sold them to a buddy. My ankle was bothering me some the next day, which I had issues with while using a lesser boot. Like mentioned above, if you have had ankle issues, the 10s are hard to move away from. Not saying that the 7s are bad in any way, I know a lot of guys really like them.
Its hard pulling the trigger on big ticket stuff sometimes and I'm notorious for being a cheap ass, but when it comes to protection I'll fork it out. Had a crash last year, busted my jaw on my handlebar and rag dolled, landing on my head and got pretty banged up. I like to think that my TLD SE4 carbon kept it from being a lot worse. I replaced it with the same one. The poly one is likely just as good.
At the end of the day you can afford it and its not the difference between keeping the lights on or not, I think you'll be alright and likely happy in the long run. I see guys at the track with new plastics and custom graphics with every after market part available and using some hundred dollar boots they scored on marketplace.

With you on the Thor Pulse gear, got a few variants between regular sets and one of the extra vented sets and it's real good, not just good for the price.

Op, this is why I don't wear a $900 helmet, I'm not that flush, so I'd rather wear mid-range and replace when needed, instead of talking myself into re-using a super expensive one haha. Loads of genuinely good, light enough, helmets for decent money nowadays.

The key here is, if you had a good crash tomorrow, you would probably have to keep using the damaged one. If that’s the case, definitely return it for a cheaper one. The only diff between mid and upper tier helmets of the same brand is weight and graphics. Get a good one that fits well, but that if you crashed hard you wouldn’t think twice about replacing it.

Seems like you can get into a 6d helmet and SG12 boots for about $300 less that what you have now but boots are a picky thing for me. I have never scrimped on helmets or boots after I started working full time.

I love the new FLY Formula and I'm a Sidi boot guy. The SG 12's are super comfortable but I like the lighter feel of the Sidi's.
