It's been a week since Trace broke his L-Collar Bone, and seems to be getting better everyday. Getting a check-up tomorrow.

Question... How many of you have had this happen to you or your child? How long were you or your child out of action??

Thanks!

My son was out for 8 weeks, no surgery. Best to listen to the doctor when he is ready. It does seem like they feel better within a short amount of time

Impossible to answer. It depends on the injury and what they did to fix it (if they did operate). I'm guessing you guys are going back and check within a month? Full recovery takes at least two to three months if I remember correctly, but partly recovery and back to "normal" activity is really related to the amount of pain. If moving his arm without a sling causes pain in the fracture area, the bone is not ready yet.

Again, it's all related to the injury, person and how it was treated.

With some luck he might be using his arm without pain after month, but the fracture will for sure only be partly healed...

4 weeks minimum if they plated it, and it was otherwise uncomplicated. My kid wouldn't ride for 6 weeks if they plated it. I chose not to plate his though, so it was 8 weeks before I let him ride.

The kid isn't earning a living doing this. Give him 8 weeks to heal it right, and that's assuming it's a straightforward, uncomplicated fracture. Give him longer if it's not.

I swim near daily for fitness. When I broke mine (displaced, complex fracture, no surgery) it was 6 weeks before I got back in the pool and swam. At 43 years of age. When I broke it at age 15 racing moto (essentially the same fracture) I was off the bike about 8-9 weeks. That was in 1974, mind you.

Everyone's different. One of the times I broke my left side I was back on the bike in 3 weeks. Then I broke the other side and it healed all weird and I was out for 6 weeks. I didn't have to have any surgery either time though.

Thanks all for the info.

Trace had a displaced, complex fracture, no surgery break like DrMarkr had.

X-ray today showed the the bones to have an overlap and are now touching each other.

Looks like 6-8 weeks off.

Thanks again,
Jim.

Don't rush him back, he's 11 and has plenty of time. My 16 yr is off now with a fractured wrist and will miss Ponca but I will only let him back on when the doctor say's it's ok and not him saying he's ok.
