Some of you forgot to 'duck the roost'.

Donate if you want to. It's a nice gesture, and it will help in one case.

Just don't expect things to get any better for all those who need the system to eliminate the inherent waste and abuse.

Oh, and wear protection when using the chemicals involved in motorsports. Not saying that's the cause here, but few people take the precautions they should. That stuff is nasty.

Done. Almost free treatment in Belgium. Something is wrong in USA. I wish a speedy recovery to Brian.

Not here, fellas. Donate or don’t; you want to argue about the system start a thread in non-moto.

Without trying to start a tireless debate, what happens if he can't come up the cash? Does the hospital just kick him out and refuse treatment? Do they give him the treatment but leave him hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt? How does it work in the States?

its illegal to refuse medical service if someone has no insurance

his family will be burdened with the debt and there is a good chance they will wind up homeless

In that case he would have to choose between ending his treatment, or continue treatment and end up with hundreds of thousands or even millions in dollars of medical debt. It is an extremely harrowing decision that many Americans have to make. The USA does not have debtors prison, so he could simply not pay the bills when they arrive. But if he has a mortgage or car loan, they will take his possessions. His credit score would also be destroyed making it incredibly difficult to rent a home, apply for a job outside of the motocross industry, or to even refinance the medical debt.

That's right, but there is a caveat to that, I believe. While public hospitals cannot refuse to treat you, by law, a private hospital must first stabilize you before shipping you out to another hospital.

I think you're wrong, it's only illegal to deny emergency treatment.

This is correct. ^^^

Knew a guy who did not have insurance and had a street bike accident. Was rushed to Emergency who stabilized him and then promptly shipped him off to some dreg hospital of horrors....where they amputated his leg instead of trying to save it.

Well it depends if it is a public or private hospital. Neither type of hospital can deny a patient emergency treatment.. ie if a patient is bleeding out on the sidewalk. Cancer treatment would not be considered emergency treatment. Private for-profit hospitals can deny a patient treatment if it is not an emergency situation.

Public hospitals cannot deny treatment even for non-emergency treatment... since they are funded with tax dollars, the rules are different for them.
