Im a 40+ mx racer that got back into it last year after a 10 year break. I bought a new pair of Fox Comp 5 off-road boots and they are the worst pair of best I've ever had. I can hardly walk for a day or two after wearing them for a few minutes. I've tried adjusting everything I can and feeling all around for the problem but I can't find why it makes my right ankle shoot with pain. Something is digging into a nerve. My just be my foot.

Anyways, I want to try a different pair. Should I look for a good used pair of Tech 10 or buy a new pair of Tech 7? Any other suggestions are welcome. We'll set a budget around $300. I can get the 7's around $250 and it looks like used 10's in my size may be a little less.

I run gaerne GX-1 boots $200.00 you can find them cheaper at like bobs cycle sometimes, it's a very light boot and hold up well, kinda like an old school boot, it's easier on the knees also

can't think of his name, but he'll be here

Sidi. Thank me later

Edit: I have broken both ankles left 3 times and the left is almost fused itself from arthritis. Haven't had one ankle injury since.

haha. Our website is in my signature. I just busted my ankle pretty badly last summer so will definitely be trying all the boots in the future (when I am released) to determine which ones feel the best on the ankle and offer the best protection. All the boots we sell are in immaculate condition. We also wouldn't sell anything that we wouldn't be comfortable putting our own feet in. We get inventory in most weeks. If you're not in a rush to buy something, I guarantee you'll see a deal on our site. Thanks

When I wore alpine stars I never got the ones with the ankle boot thing. Great boots

Then switched to gaerne, just as good.

I would not buy anything else.

High point and Full Bore made good stuff back in the day.

I'm a huge fan of the Sidi as well. Not sure if they can be had in the $300 range used or not.

Those Sidi's look pretty sweet. Price does seem a bit out of my range though.

I just snapped my tibia (medial malleolus) in a set of tech 10's that had just under 2 seasons of ride time on them. Can't say I'm too pleased with how quickly they wore out and allowed my ankle to invert and snap my ankle. I'll be buying a pair of gaerne SG-12 or sidi's when I'm back on the bike. Just had surgery on Wednesday.

Sidi's if you have normal size feet.

Gaerne SG 12 if you have wide feet or want the most confertable, long lasting boot

They last twice as long as most. So consider that. The Gaerne is also one hell of a boot even the lower priced boot.

I had Tech 10's and moved to SG12's 2 years ago. I felt less movement and a tad less stability. I also took a chunk out of the inside of my right boot kicking my bike.... wasn't happy bout that.

But today I ordered new Instincts. Hopefully they live up to the billing, for $559 I'm expecting a mix of Tech 10 and SG12 quality and peformance.

I've switched from Sidis to Instincts. If you hold the Sidi boot, you can bend it sideways 90 degrees right above the ankle. That really concerned me that it had zero support in that direction. None of the other high end boots do that.

Try everything on and see. I tried a pair of Sidi Crossfires and I couldn't even wear them around the house. They were seriously the most uncomfortable thing I could imagine!
Tech 10s and Tech 8s are my favorites, but you might hate those.
Try everything on and see.

Thanks man. My wife is pregnant and due in 10 weeks so needless to say she is less than thrilled with me right now. Hah!

To the OP - buy the best boot you can afford and good luck!
