Best era of MX/SX was late 70s early 80s we know we were there and are still here now. The money in the sport and professionalism with the factory rigs and set ups is pretty cool but the racing is not even close. You young punks need to realize you missed the golden age of MX when you could make a fake pit pass and hang out with the riders and teams and get right next to the track during a race, the list goes on. And turn off that video game and get a job !! WinkWink

I have gone back and watched races both indoors and out from that era. I also lived the late 90’s early 2000’s hay days. Our sport was a total joke back then. Driving vans and box trucks all over the county making jack shit for money having tracks built by any joe blow who volunteered his time and maybe making the highlights on tv 2 weeks after the race. I loved the McGrath era and thought it was the best thing ever until going back and watching it now. Just because a bunch of old timers talked shit on the line and would spear each other every opportunity they had doesn’t make it better. Bob Hannah rode junk equipment on tracks not fit to be a modern vet track. I really don’t give a shit what he has to say about the modern sport. As far as getting back to the video games I’ll leave that one up to maverick. All the evidence I need to prove this sport is 100% better is in the photos in this thread.

Hannah rode the trickest, most advanced, one off hand built works of art this sport has ever seen.

The vans and traveling is one of the things that made the sport better and provided all the great stories. And factory riders showed up at local races to steal the purse money and get in some practice.

The tracks ? Go back a few posts to the photo of Hannah at Unadilla. That's an actual motocross track with real bumps and everything. And spectators could actual view the racing up close and personal. And local racers didn't complain to the track operator about track prep. We were just
Happy ( super pumped ) to go racing.

Millions of dirt bikes were being sold and nobody talked about the decline of the sport or how to get more people involved. If the sport was 100% better there would be 10 different brand bikes on the start line and 500 entrants at local tracks all over CA every weekend. And night races Tues, Wed, Thurs. FRI nites.

Yes, the 70s and 80s were definately the best time for this sort. Like lostboy819 said, You missed the Golden age of MX.
It's not your fault. You don't know what you don't know.

That was so well said! Its a waste of breath and time on these know all yuppies though...they think big rig transporters and tv coverage nake the sport superior now..Laughing 3LaughingLaughingLaughing
Ive been racing since 1981, still racing now...
I can remember attending the Broadford round of the Mister Motocross series in 1983..the crowd was at least 6 deep all the way around the perimeter fence...everyone knew and adored the heroes...Steve Gall, Ray Vandenberg, Anthony Gunter, Jeff Leisk , Trevor Williams, Marty Moates, Jimmy Elliss , Robin Rhodes....and so many more.

Go to a modern day mx national here and you are lucky if theres 200 spectators...and im pretty damn sure they arent there just because the top guys are set up with big rig race transporters and computer aided cpu setup..

Young people are so cocky that it makes their ignorance even more hilarious! The sport is fucked now...barely breathing and they think that now is the shit and back in the day was just shit...LaughingLaughingLaughing

Damn, I must have something in my eye.....

The days before litpro and gopro, racers RACED to qualify, and having announcers tell us so and so turned a 41.0002 lap compared to yahoo's 41.0004.

To me the most iconic moto photo of all time. I don't know if it was "better" back in the day but it sure as hell was fun!

Just getting around to this thread. Lostbro and SCR absolutely nailed it. 100% truth. You missed the best era if you weren't around for 70s and 80s MX. There were 2 types of kids back then in my area of California - those with a dirt bike and those wanting one

This is when the Track was the real deal, rough, fast, loamy dirt....real outdoor MX, I never missed a Unadilla back then, dreamed of riding that track as a kid, finally happened in 93 when they had amateur racing before the national, it started with an all day open practice Thursday, I must have drained 2 full tanks on my 93 CR250, I remember being so tired I could barely race the weekend! IMO, the track is a shadow of what it used to be..... the deep ripping of the track leads to stupid deep ruts everywhere, the addition of ridiculous jumps. How hard would it be to just reseed it, let grass grow long again for the start of the national, leave the disc behind the barn for one year?

I agree. This is what Unadilla use to look like if you were first out for Saturday AM practice. (shot is coming down the wall) I remember DeCoster stopping in front of me to pull the long grass out pegs etc.

Everything is better nowadays if you go by that standard. You must be into materialistic things. I'm not even to my mid-thirties and I can tell you that you are dead wrong. This sport is a joke compared to what it used to be.

One more with Lackey. About 5 minutes into practice. Some grass starting to get eaten up at the top of the hill. Check out the track in the distance all in green.

Saying the racing from that era was better is like saying the 1903 version of the Wright brothers plane is what we should use to dog fight in modern war.... there was nothing attractive about guys in crappy gear jumping 40’ jumps front wheel high. ? I get tired of this “back in our day” B.S.
Dog fighting back in World War I was far superior to what it is now. It was true art. Back then it was man vs man and their flying skills and bravery won the day. Today it is computer tracking from 60 miles away. Sometimes back in the day was better.

Another one in agreement. Those posts are spot-on. You can't even compare the 2 eras. The technology was changing so rapidly that most guys were riding different (major changes/enhancements) bikes almost on a weekly basis. There was very little "tweaking settings" lol. I'm sure a lot of you guys were around when we went from 7"/4" to 12/12 and all the experimental components that got us there. AND just about everyone in the neighborhood had a dirt bike, not a Playstation.

Back in the 2 stroke days, could do a top end the night before a race. Be out 40$ for a piston kit and gaskets.

Try getting this close to the action these days. Lake Whitney 1981.

This guy has some fantastic photo albums from 70-80’s MX Nationals.

The two stroke power chewed up the Unadilla track making almost every section fascinating to watch, the track was never groomed and was amazing watching 10 different approaches to one section. Today 4 strokes are incredibly high speed fast and the linear power just leaves long ruts, not as interesting IMO, Great photos

Agreed..
However if the idiotic, carnival like jumps were removed, and if they would just plant grass and leave the dozers parked at the end of the day's racing like they did in the old days- it would be an improvement.
The natural terrain rough track design exposed mistakes, required a thoughtful line selection strategy, demanded fitness, and provided an exciting enough platform for plenty of excellent racing- without resorting to cartoon like, childish buffoonery.

The bikes are WAY better now but to say moto is better now is a matter of perception IMHO. Sure, the presentation looks more professional with all the Semis and bling stuff...BUT...the scene and vibe is LIGHT years behind where it was. You had to be there to appreciate it and understand....different times and lifestyles, we were much more free to enjoy life
