I have a 2016 kx250f that started making a noticeable ticking noise midday while I was riding so I shut it off and stopped riding it. Today, which is a couple months later I started it to see what it was doing before I take it to get checked out and it was ticking at idol and shut off after about 10 second and wouldn’t start back. Any idea what this could be???

Broken valve spring or other valve train related issue. Pop the valve cover off and take a look. Tdc and check valve gaps.

Preciate it! The only thing that makes me iffy about it being valves is that it’s never had a problem starting until that one time. 1-3 kicks everytime

It started ticking mid ride while engine was running or did it start immediately after starting it during your ride?

Check the timing. My situation was a bit different, but I had a simple tip over and the timing gear jumps a tooth. Same scenario. Loud ticking. Fixed the timing and it went away.
If yours isn't starting, you may want to pull the head and have it looked at as well. Fix it now for a few hundred, or let it fail all the way and spend thousands on a new motor.

It has a brand new OEM head and full top end on it, probably 5 hours on it. I had a cracked head so I had we put a new head and everything on it. Also checked out the top end when ticking first started and everything’s good

Along with the valves, check the cam chain tensioner. It's spring loaded and when they start to fail you'll get a cam chain tick. That's if you're lucky to notice it before it throws the chain.
