Bike for a 16yr old

So I’ve been riding a Yamaha TTR110 for 2 yrs now and I need to upgrade I’m to tall and big for it. Should I upgrade to a 250 or 125 both Kawasaki’s. 6’ ft. and 120lbs

Both of those bikes are going to be beyond a MASSIVE difference to the ttr110 you're used to riding. Insanely snappy power compared to you're previous bike. Absolutely get comfy on the 125 before ever touching a 250! If you have access to a 2 stroke 85 or super mini that wouldn't be a bad idea to adjust to the powerband of the 2 strokes. 125 is more than enough at 120lbs

125 hands down. You'll learn to use momentum, throttle control will be the next thing you'll fine tune, cost wise the 125 will be cheaper up front. Now you will be doing top ends more but that will amount to 60 to 100$ every 3-6 months pending on how hard you ride. The 250 will last longer and can be manageable. However it's a lot of power coming up from that ttr. Could you handle it?of course I know many vital members do. Yet I believe a 125 is your best bet.

Get you a second hand YZ 125. Solid bike, good suspension. What 06 to present pretty much the same.

He's 6 ft.! I was that tall at 16 but heavier and most likely stronger but-

He will adjust to the 250 whatever just fine. As said the 110 was a mini bike compared to a real bike. With his knees above the handlebars.

6 ft. at 16, will most likely be well above 6 ft. Start hitting the weights and the rest will come.

The 4 stroke race bike is worlds smoother(less work) than a 125 2 stroke. And he's used to crappy 4 strokes. Seems natural to me.

Without the "back in the day" stuff, we moved up to 250's as soon as possible. 125's were for kids.

To finish- look at Cianciarulo(6'1"). He looks cramped on a factory kx250. He sits down a lot. Yes, I know he is fast.

And why only Kawasaki's?

It doesn’t have to be that’s just what he prefers

^^This^^. At about 16 I was the same height @ 175 lbs. on an 84 RM125. It will help you transition to the 250 when you are ready. In 87 I transitioned to a CR250 that was easier to do after spending some time on the 125. Good to see a younger person interested in the sport & a 2t. Good luck on your quest.

When I turned 16 in the early 80’s, I went from a 1980 RM100 in the schoolboy class to a 1981 RM250 in the 250B class. I actually loved the power and torque difference. I grew to handle the power difference. It wasn’t that hard.

Yes, It was probably the course a lot of racers followed. The difference was that anyone close to maturity wanted to ride real bikes(250's and up). The young man is 6' tall!. He will most likely grow and get heavier unless there is something wrong with him physically. 125's put out 40 hp. 10-15 more is fun and manageable.

Go with a 125 for sure. He is way too big for an 85 or 100 cc super mini. Maybe not HP wise but just physically too big.

125? He's taller than an average man, right now. As you said "he's way too big".

I don't feel like you meant this being an ass, but Junior does need to pack some weight on. Had a buddy that was really light and man, seemed like he was always breaking something.

125 two stroke and some meat and potatoes.

I feel like a kid who's only been riding for 2 years on a TTR110 should probably ease himself into the scene a bit. Learn how to ride a full size bike with a clutch and gears first. Look for a TTR250 or something similar.

Lets face it, you're not going racing in the near future. Get something reliable, easy to ride and learn on. Then go for the highly strung 2 stroke/4stroke race bike down the track when you know what you're doing.

I would say get a 125 but there is no reason you can’t get a 250 and grow into it.
A 250 isn’t too scary, you will know how hard to push it and be fine on it.

My son 6 years ago, at 16 decided he wanted to race MX, last bike he had ridden was a PW 80.
That weekend 6 years ago I had dragged him out of bed, to help me out racing at our major MX of the year. Next day on way to school told my wife can dad buy me a bike so I can race.
Bought him a second hand KTM 125 SX, to learn how to ride again.
6 months later got him a 250 XCF, then he progressed to a 250 SXF.
