On Monday's Pulp show they were joking about signing Malcolm Stewart to Fly. The joke number that Steve threw out, $800,000 for gear, is allegedly only being met or exceeded by one rider. That rider is not Roczen or Tomac. Who is it? Anderson? ...Savatgy?

Wouldn’t be surprised if it is Barcia or Webb. Barcia has a big astars contract and Webb’s Thor contract is newer than Musquin I believe. It also could very well be chad reed...whatever he wears people are going to buy.

They were repeating that Alpinestars pays a lot.

There’s a bloke in Europe gets paid pretty well for gear. Nobody on the planet is getting 800k usd though. Bullshit.

I may be mistaken but I believe Steve has said numerous times that Alpinestars pays a million, I would guess that's over the course of the contract though. He's also said Alpinestars puts all the money from their gear sales back into paying riders.

I believe Reed’s old Thor contract was well over a million.

I don't know how accurate it is, but DV mentioned in a thread here a few years ago that both Dungey and Roczen were getting $1 million from Fox.

I should imagine AC222 is being paid a lot of money from Answer.
That one isn’t that high, and it’s also a team deal with De Carli KTM.

That's a shame. A 9 time world champion could get a higher contract i guess?

ML, Can you tell us something about the difference in USA vs GP contracts and payments? Bonusses etc. How much does a MX2 GP rider get compared to AMA?

Euro dudes make peanuts in gear vs us riders. Cairoli was probably a bargain for ANSR. 10 time world champ for less money than a 10th place 450 SX guy.
If Roczen is getting less than 1.5 from Fox for head to toe + goggles then he’s getting short changed.

I remember hearing that RC and Bubba we’re getting a million each to wear fox during the 04-07 days. And that Roczens getting a least a million to be head to toe Fox, but I think that numbers probably a little low. I think A-Stars pay Barcia over a million a year also. I wonder if we’ll see Barcia, Tomac, or Anderson in A-Star helmets next year? If I had to guess I’d say Webb probably took a pay cut with his Thor deal too. Thor extended his contract at the end of last year, but they only did a 1 year extension with him.

If that’s the case with Webb, I’ll bet they’re regretting that one year deal now.

That specific deal was around half number you mentioned and then passed on to RV when he took the torch (and Reed then switched after 2010). The guy on the #1 on a green bike has the biggest deal currently but he's also won almost half of the SX races over the last 3 years and won 2 outdoor titles in a row, so that's only natural.

These numbers are a tad high but there is some truth here also. The Webb one was interesting because he was the most highly sought after rider in recent times coming out of 250 but that wasn't the case last off-season for obvious reasons. Everyone was bidding in that summer/fall of 2016.

Their base contracts seem to be a bit better/even across the board (not as many highs but not as many lows). Their bonus structure is less than over here but they also have their “national” series programs. I think their base pay is decent because they basically have no gear deal options. Some guys have goggle options but gear is typically a team deal over there...as almost every team is actually privately owned (HRC MXGP, KRT, KTM MXGP, Husky MXGP etc are not owned by the oems).

He’s worth it because he is so recognizable. He has the longest lines, the biggest cheers etc.

Can anyone explain why Astars would pay Barcia such big bucks to wear gear that they don't even sell here? I don't get it.

Still advertising regardless of if that particular set is being sold. Example: They don't sell the one-off tech 10s from Vegas but its sure as hell great advertising because people will go search the web looking to try to obtain them.

I recall reading (or more likely hearing on Pulp) that Barcia's deal was contingent on him having a factory gig. Does anyone know if thats true, or did I imagine it?
