KDX 200

XR 250 with a 280 kit if you like tight stuff.

XR 400 is my favorite though, Dammit I miss it. But on the heavy side, I could climb anything with it.

The kdx is a wonderful bike, but staying in that range you can't go wrong with an updated version of the ktm 200. A great all around bike no matter if it is an older xc version or newer xc-w version.

I put klx300 forks on my kdx-instant five pounds of weight dropped. Handled a lot better too; the next best thing to making a hybrid. I dropped 14 total pounds from my bike and it was a different bike at that weight and with those forks. Added an fmf gnarly pipe and it hit like an mx bike. Good stuff. Wish id kept it.

I put kx250 front forks on it, sits up higher but better ride in my opinion

I had that option, but the klx forks are a simple switch with zero mods (except adding a little to the fork stops to keep them from hitting the gas tank). Kx forks required way too much work for me (shortening the travel, pressing in a new stem, etc.) I prefer the "lazy bastard" approach to mods. I am very seriously considering trading my newly-rebuilt 2000 kx 250 for another h-series kdx200. Theres a local guy offering the kdx and enough boot to make it worth my wile.

I ride a lightly modded 94 KLX 250 in the woods, with handguards, it's blast. You can chug around in 2nd gear and go anywhere, as long as there's traction. And cheap, too. I recently rode my old CR500 on a tight Hare scrambles woods loop. Now my project is to put my CR500 motor into a late modle RMZ 250 chassis. Woo HooWoohoo

As you can sort of see from the votes, less is more in the woods, for Average Joe.

Good torque.
Smooth, controllable power.
Light weight and not too big or tall for the rider.
A bike the rider feels HE has control over.
Plush suspension.

Those are the things that make a good woods bike.

anybody ridden the 15 yz250fx. it... to me... seemed like the best of both worlds. i wonder if they have had water issues on the electrical syst with the fx.

Buddy of mine bought one for his son and it has really turned him into a great rider. He stepped his game way up since getting on the FX. His Dad even thinks it might be the best woods bike he's ever rode.

They've got over 60 hard hours on it with no issues. Seems bulletproof.

My personal favorite has to be my 2013 200 XC-W, out of the box its an all around great woods bike. Super plush and forgiving, can ride it like a 125 and make all sorts of sweet sounds or even lug it like a 4 stroke at times in the technical stuff. Seriously a great bike in the woods.

However the best woods bike has to go to the KTM 300XC, I've said it before and will say it again, its a bike so good you don't have to be. No matter what you do the bike always has plenty of smooth power to save you, put it in third gear and just ride.

Yes, I agree. My 200 XC-W is the best bike I have ever owned.

KDX 250 best of both worlds, too bad they weigh just this side of an anchor. I love mine it's heavy flywheel makes if go like a 4-stroke and gearing is awesome for Indiana trails just need to spring it for your weight and make a few other mods. Go to KDXrider.neet for everything KDX.

My XR440 is that one bike I wish I hadn't sold to make room in the garage. What a fun bike it was to ride and I should have made the Warden park her car outside.

Yep, can't beat a KTM200 in the woods.

On the other end of the scale. CR 500AFX with Rekluse is surprisingly good in the woods as well, not what you'd expect.

Can't beat the Kato 200 for the grin factor though.

Keen to try a new YZ125 with a 167cc kit. IMO, it could possibly rival the KTM200

Depends on what your definition of Woods is. If it's tight, KTM 200 or 250XC-W. If more wide open, KTM 300 XCW or XC. As previous posters have said, the 300 is the ultimate do it all, off road bike. If you're not convinced, pull up a couple of youtube vids of Johnny Walker riding his 300. What he does on a KTM 300 will blow your mind!

to be clear I haven't had a chance to ride a lot of woods bikes, I'm 13 so still haven't had much of a chance to ride many but I can't see how something could beat a KDX 200 but maybe it's just my riding style, I like that you can ride it like a 2 stroke or a 4 stroke, but maybe there are better bikes out there I haven't yet experienced, what are your guy's thoughts?
There is absolutely no question that your KDX 200 with 80s technology is the best bush bike in the world. Jesus Christ !

Man I would have loved to ride one with the 440 kit. How much of a difference was it compared to the stock motor?

Fuckin shame about the XR line, rock solid machines.
