So many threads these days about "greatest," "best ever." You guys watch too much lame ESPN.

On your best day, you couldn't hold National #40's jockstrap.

No question...the Dogger. His laziness is that of legend. But...boy he could ride with sooooo little effort.

JMB and the Dogger rode a lot. But they did not do the normal training that say Stanton did.

You can eat whatever the hell you want if you train hard enough to burn those calories off.

Lechien, Roberts and Reedy all have had stories of basically being hungover as fuck, if not partially drunk, no sleep and winning races. Think GL might have a couple too. That's gotta be hard to beat.

Who was the best rider that did the least amount of work, obviously people like JLaw come to mind (however I don’t know how hard he actually trained) but then I heard Chicken say on a podcast he used to ride out of sight and dump 90% of his gas and sit under a tree and chill out for a couple hours haha
I thought Lechien was the one who dumped his gas after riding out of sight from his house.

The Dogger Ron Lechien hands down
In 2014, Lechien was at Glen Helen with the Maxima truck setting up their display. He was visiting with a few of us folks, when someone brought up training in his day vs today. He stated his problem started when he was really young, because at such a young age he could beat the pros of the day with what seemed little effort. He wasn't bragging at all, he just said it was kind of a curse. He had no real "drive" because he could take care of business while everyone else was training to be their best, all while still doing whatever he wanted. His talent level was unthinkable......

I think I saw something once about how team Kawasaki dropped off a pair of practice bikes with Ron Lechien and several weeks later the bikes hadn't even been started. Does anyone else remember seeing this anywhere, or am I imagining it? Pretty sure it was in a documentary (maybe Motocross Files?).
I did see that and I believe it is from The MX Files. Maybe Ron Turner Team Manager was talking about dropping of bike and equipment air filter Etc. and Dogger never touch it . LOL Good stuff.

RC retired Stewart out and Whindham...well he should be on this list of slackers too...Reed could have won 08' off of his residual fitness from 07'!

Ryan Mills was another one. Talented is an understatement. If he would of just had the structure and dedication off the track the possibilities could of been endless. He is a fellow New Yorker and we had the same group of friends growing up. Ryan turned expert at like 12 or 13 years old and right off the bat would beat up on all the local pro’s who would run top 20 at nationals! In 2002 he partied all week at Loretta’s with us and still went out and won the 125A class and battled Davi Millsaps for the 125 12-15 title that week. He just had the talent to pull it off

JMB if comparing to teammate Jeff Stanton
It is COMPLETELY insane to imply that either one of these guys didn't train.

Btw, my answer: DV12
I recall there was a time that he was kicking ass and didn't train too much...in the sense that he didn't want to "over train"...if I'm recalling things correctly.

Speaking of the French riders I recall reading about how Stephan Ronconda didn’t seem to train. Remember him talking about eating hot dogs etc on race day.

Ron Lechien won a 250 SX (premier class) at the age of 16 in the most competitive time of the sport. That would be like a kid like Jett Lawrence winning a 450 Main last year.

Talent to burn would be an understatement.

Can someone post a good link of a Lechein race? I would certainly be interested in watching him race

Joel Robert
Can remember reading that when Joel won one of his World titles it came down to the final moto of the final race The rider that could win it had his bike on the line 40mins before the start and sat on it and stared down the start straight Roberts rolled up to the start line with under a minute to go and stubbed a cigarette out on the other riders handlebars causing the other riders bottle to go

This post reminded me of someone who hasn't been mentioned yet...Sorby! He didn't have the success that some of the others guys had, but the dude was famously anti-training (apparently he laid in a tanning bed with bike shorts on, so Mitch would think he was doing road rides), and he absolutely ripped.

Ron Lechien. Heard story's of him tell his dad he was going jogging, turn the corner and light up a big fat one, spray some water on his shirt to look like he was sweating and walk home. Wake up in the morning and smoke check everybody on a race day. Gotta love it! One of the most naturally talented riders to ever throw a leg over a dirt bike.
