Best rider to put in the least amount of effort (training etc)

Edited Date/Time 12/9/2019 8:43am
All this talk of most skilled, most hardcore etc etc got me thinking...
Who was the best rider that did the least amount of work, obviously people like JLaw come to mind (however I don’t know how hard he actually trained) but then I heard Chicken say on a podcast he used to ride out of sight and dump 90% of his gas and sit under a tree and chill out for a couple hours haha

That is funny about Chicken. Never heard that one,

I don't want to downplay or insult Stewart but I thought he used to talk about how he didn't train. He even said in that interview not long ago that he would chill and eat junk food and then beat RC. But then RC of course fired back in hilarious fashion, on Instagram. I dunno, probably the guys from the 90s partied more and didn't train, but James did seem to rely on his talent more than anything (which was obviously an insane amount of it.)

The Dogger!!!!!

Hands down.
Competed and won at the highest levels while training at the lowest levels.
No one else comes close.

JMB also reportedly did not do a ton of traditional training but he DID spend a TON of time on the bike.

I think I saw something once about how team Kawasaki dropped off a pair of practice bikes with Ron Lechien and several weeks later the bikes hadn't even been started. Does anyone else remember seeing this anywhere, or am I imagining it? Pretty sure it was in a documentary (maybe Motocross Files?).

Yeah, I would say at worst maybe up until about '95 MC didn't really train super hard. He wanted that MX championship to shut people up though and he worked hard for it... Kept his training up from there through retirement. I still say he looked better/faster/more fit in 2000 than he did in 2001 though. Then he overtrained prior to 2002 and it was all over.

I wouldn't be surprised if JLaw never trained off the bike. He seemed like the kind of guy that just rode all the time.

Joel Robert - if even just a 10th of what was written about him and his lifestyle is true.

Yeah, it was in Dogger's Motocross Files. They gave him at least one practice bike, and when his mechanic stopped by his house a few months later, the bike was buried under a bunch of crap in his garage, and hadn't even been started.

Robert is definitely a good choice, but to the best of my knowledge, he was just a drinker & cig smoker. The Dogger would literally stay out all night doing hardcore drugs, then show up at the track with no sleep (and probably still high/drunk) and smoke the fastest guys on the planet.

I read an interview with the dogger where they gave him a training bike and when they came back to visit he hadn’t even used it once.

Pourcel. And no effort on the bike either. Made it look easy.

Well he said he didn't train jokingly and eat great but he, and J-Bone confirmed this, burned tanks and tanks of gas riding. He might not have been cross training but he was riding

Swink didn’t train much when he was around me. I would go to the gym, run and he would sit and play Nintendo. Lol

Lechien hands down, nobody close.

Won supercross and national events without riding or training during the week.

He used one set of tires on his practice bike during the 86 supercross season.

His mechanic dropped off the bike and came back a few weeks later to maintenance it and it hadn’t been ridden.

This is greatness. I love hearing these type of stories about the pros.
