Best oil to run is what ever oil you’ve had the best luck with. But HP-2 oil is what I’ve run in all of my YZ’s since the 90’s. Great oil

Motul 800, 32:1.

I use it both my 2018's YZ250 & YZ250X.

I'm surprised I haven't seen K2 mentioned. That's all one ran in my 250sx and seem to have no problems. Am I missing something? Lol. M800 smelled really good riding with a friend the other day, he said his bikes stopped blowing up when he went from 40:1 to 50:1

Motul 800 2T. 50:1.

Pistons still look new when doing top ends. I've used it for 20 years without issue.

So i’ve seen that Motul 800 is a good oil to use, but i’ve seen 2 ratios. For motocross and woods what ratio should i use? 32:1 or 50:1?

Castrol A747 smells beautiful.
I have been running A747 with 40:1 mix ratio for over ten years and never have had any two stroke oil related problems. Plus it smells great Smile

What the other guy's said. Super clean burning oil and you can still feel it on the internal parts like piston when you rebuild it.
I got a 20 litre drum of 800 years ago when I was riding 2 strokes a lot, and on the label it said MX 50:1 and SX 66:1. I go with what the oil company who makes and tests the oil says their oil should be run at over a blanket statement of 32:1. And they aren't going to tell you to ruin your engine using their oil at said ratios.

Ive been running motul 800 since I got my 2000 YZ125 brand new. (thanks mom and dad!)

Ive been racing YZ125's and YZ250's for the last decade, mostly off-road and desert.

Ive always been able to get way more hours out of my top ends and bottom ends than other people I know who race the same series I do. Your premix is one part of a multiple part equation. The ratio is just another part. Overall jetting and setup dictates your premix ratio.

I run a 50/50 mix of VP C12 and VP 100 octane unleaded, motul 800 36:1. 48 pilot, 178 main, 40 powerjet, stock needle, clip 2nd position down from the top, air screw 1.5 turns out. I usually get at least 50 hours to a top end, minimal spooge.

In my opinion, air filter maintenance is as important if not more important. All the modern oils are good enough. Sure, 927 has a high flashpoint and gets a little gummy, but all the major brand premix oils will offer enough protection. When I ride a sand track, I'll bring spare filters and change often. I've seen a lot of people blame a premix when their air filter program is at fault.

Thankyou everyone for your responses. I think I’m going to run the Motul 800 at 40:1 as that seems a middle ground out of everything. Do you think I’ll foul plugs in the woods running that ratio when I race harescrambles?

what is your jetting, and what elevation are you riding at? Also what dynodan said is absolutely critical. Clean your air filter after every race/ride. That includes completely cleaning out the airbox. Your premix/jetting/racegas/reeds whatever are meaningless if your bike cant breathe, or worse yet sucks in grit.

Im a perfectionist so my bike is always maintained to the highest i posssibly can which includes cleaning the airfilter and the box every ride or a change of air filter in the day if it is really dusty. Iam 43ft or 13 metres above sea level. I have only just bought the bike so i dont know all the carb jets etc.

Super M or 927 has worked very well for me at 40:1.

The only jetting change I made was a leaner main for my Rad Valve.

The bike is for sale in Pittsburgh if anyone is interested. It's a 2016.

An oil I will NEVER use again is 927.

Tried 927 once in the early 90s and it was the only oil that's ever caused an issue. Gummed up my rings in two rides to the point that I was losing compression. Took it apart and rings and piston were filthy dirty. There's no reason to run such a dirty burning oil when there are so many clean burning oils available. Yeah, it smells good but not worth it.

My preference is Yamalube...not too pricey, burns clean and top end wears great with it.

^^^ No idea if the formula was different back then but I've always ran Maxima 927 in all my bikes at 40:1 and never once had an issue. Everything always came out looking clean.

Either Motul 800 or Ipone Samourai at 40:1. Have run 50:1 also, with not even one problem.

we ran K2 in our 125's for awhile but when I got the KDX's, I switched back to much cheaper Yamalube 2R.

Castrol A747 has long been the oil that the factories / race use as the standard. I know some old factory mechanics that said their teams used it in spite of being sponsored by other oil companies.

Honda HRC use to all but demand that it was used in their road race 2 two strokes that they sold.

Maxima's K2 was their answer to A747, as many of the teams they sponsored thought 927 ran too dirty, which castors tend to.

But, basically the most highly touted two stroke oils are the high viscosity oils and they tend to run best in the 40:1 - 50:1 range as they have about a SAE-50 rating.

Top pro level 125 mx racers should run 32:1 and 250's at 40:1.

From there the rest of us can ease off a bit. A mere 250+ cc trail rider that rarely gets above 1/2 throttle needs no more than 50:1 of a good oil like R2, 800, HP2, K2, A747, super technoplate, R50 or other high viscosity oils.
