Seeing what. Barcia has done with his opportunity this season got me thinking, who’s the best fill in rider of all time?

"Fill in" Phil?

His career is one big fill in ride.

Has he ever been an official team member with more than a series deal?

John Dowd

He took over flaky Mike Craig’s factory Yamaha ride midway through the 1994 nationals, won the Millville and Binghampton 250 nationals.

After this fill in role he was signed held the Yamaha factory ride for another 5 years (1995-1999) that included 125SX wins (7) and titles (1) 125 Motocross wins (2), 250 Motocross wins (3).

Beat the best names in the sport for race wins. Beat Jeremy McGrath for a supercross main event win, best Ricky Carmichael outdoors for 2 overalls, and Emig at his peak for national wins.

Dowd was 29 in 1994 when he got the fill in ride.

It was just 1 ride but when BT101 went from the couch and got 2nd at the MXoN was pretty special. (he should have just gone back to the couch after that though to be fair)

I feel Christian Craig has done pretty well for Honda the past couple years.

Matt Walker filled in at PC for I don't remember who and he won his first SX as a replacement in Houston 2002 which was an East Coast round. Actually, PC showed up with 2 fill ins at Houston. Sorby was the second replacement and he got 3rd.

What is Sorby doing these days? Back in France or still in the US? Teaching riding schools?

He did an interview with racer x very recently. Maybe somebody with more ambition than me will be a sport and link to it. I remember that he now lives on an island close to Spain and raises parrots or something.

Thanks. I looked it up and although short it's a pretty good read. I remember the summer he came up to Canada to race. Instantly stood out on the track. Great to see that he got clean.

+1. The 99 suzuki in 2002 was a fairy tale story of an unproven rider getting a golden opportunity and surpassing everyones expectations.

Alot of the riders now arnt true fill-ins. With money tight, riders that deserve rides get the deals late/have to wait for someone to get hurt.
