Who's the best starter in motocross history? I'm a new school cat and don't know much about old school Moto, so my opinion would be Ashley Fiolek and Mike Alessi. Adam Cianciarulo has his starts patented as well. Were their any old school Moto guys that were better than those three?

What I have been wondering is how much they actually practice starts. According to just about every single interview or keys to a race for the past 20+years the start is just about everything (SX and MX). Assuming that is true, it would seem to me that you should practice starts about 75% of each day of training. Especially if you are one of the bigger budget teams. Just burn through about 100 clutches a week in an attempt to make gains with the bike and the riders reaction time. If I was a team manager I would run this drill over and over with my riders and measure every aspect of the riders starting technique and how it affects their start times.

Unless, it's all bullshit and every rider (except the winner) uses it as a scapegoat.

One rider gets the holeshot each week.

One rider in each class ends up with the overall win at the end of the day.

There's a lot of room for scapegoating.

It was interesting in the post-race press conference last weekend. Gary Bailey suggested to Mike Alessi that he focuses so much attention on his starts, that it's maybe detrimental to the rest of his riding. Mike didn't disagree with him.

I used to be the best around, then they replaced the rubber band start with starting gates and I was never able to adapt.

Jeff Emig comes to mind for me. Barcia might be on his way to claiming that title though. He's got those starts dialed.

Emig was the first one that came to mind. I know he and his Dad put in A LOT of work practicing different techniques and getting his bike set up just for the starts. I gated next to him at an amateur nat once, timed the gate perfect and he just blew right past me.

Best starter on a bone stock bike in the 125-pro class was Eric Hall.
I'm sure BobbyM can back me up on this one,or others that remember Eric....
The guy would holeshot nationals against the factory guys,he ran a bone stock 125 motor.
His technique was great .

My son comes to mind....taught by Radical Ron Turner. Pulled the holeshot on Mike Alessi on a regular basis in the amateur ranks back in 2003 and 2004.

When Magoo would pull a Holeshot he'd leave the Entire Field in another Zip Code...especially at places like Saddleback or Carlsbad.

Rick Ryan, Rodney Smith & Dubach would issue beatings as well.

As an Amateur on his way up, Timmy Aston pulled some pretty damn amazing starts.

In baseball they count everything. Is there a Moto database somewhere that has data like this?

Alessi will go down in history as the biggest "hero to zero" .. gets the start and then gets in everyones way as he's fading like a cheap suite . this year may be a bit different but thats because there's nobody out there besides Dungey and Weimer

In 2007 he finshed the series Second, in 2008 he was the only one to challenge Bubba, In 2009 he won 2 of the first 3 races and then got hurt, 2010 and 2011 he was off but still was top 5. Im not an Alessi fan at all but when you make posts make sure there correct he gets passesd usually by a couple of guys I would not call that folding.
