In reaction to the JS, RC, RV, & MC Topic I thought it would be a good time to talk about who the best second best Motocross racers were of all time.

Such as IMHO a fan favorite called Chad Reed is one of the best second best of all time if not ever.

Jeff Emig being a close second IMO

Kevin Windham & Jeff Ward battle for third.

Interesting. I never thought of Jeff Ward as 2nd best.

I think Ron Lechein was the best third place guy ever.

Johnson, Ward...then Ronny would come stumbling in to collect his third place prize money...unless he was feeling it, then he laid waste to those other two guys.

I'll go with Kurt Nicoll for Mr. #2

Dungey. He's a guy that couldn't beat RV when he's there, but up until this year could beat anyone else handily.

Reed, and it's not even close. The guy only has 3 championships and you would still have a good argument if you put him top 5 of all time. He was so far ahead of 3rd place so many times, only to have the greatest ever far ahead of him.

If we take Carmichael out of the equation, here is Reed's resume:

2003 SX Champion
2004 SX Champion
2004 MX Champion
2005 SX Champion
2005 MX Champion
2006 MX Champion
2007 MX Champion
2008 SX Champion
2009 MX Champion

Things to note:

There were times Reed chose not to race MX, or dropped out of the series late because Carmichael was too far ahead to catch. I don't think he does that if Carmichael isn't there and Reed is in the championship lead.

It also isn't taking into account James Stewart's crashing in 2006 while battling Carmichael. If Carmichael isn't there, Stewart isn't pushing as hard and maybe doesn't crash so much.

Also, if that's the career he has, who knows if he could hold off the Ryans in 2010 and beyond to grab more championships.

All for not though, because the prime of his career happened to coincide with the GOAT's career. Nobody else's did that for more than a season or two. Very unfortunate for sure. It's an interesting thought though.

Well someone said stewart and he has had a perfect season, 2nd all time sx wins, most 125 wins of all time, 1 outdoor championship, 2 sx titles etc

The topic was second best. Not best when no one was there haha. Dungey fans have their orange panties in a bunch. You think he would still be 2nd all time if RV was healthy those seasons where he was basically uncontested? Please. Hes right there with chad and kdub as second best.
