Hard to argue against Robert.

.....and he'd have a smoke and a beer after the race, too! Ha! I wish I could have seen all those guys on the track together.

my first pick rj. 1982 at 17 he was a broken front wheel away from the title on a piece of shit stock radiator on the handle bar yz 250. but rc won a title his first year on a 250. but he had 3 years in the pros before that. i think rj had just one year on the 125. being a vet i have to give it to rj!!! joel robert is has to be 2nd shit i cant believe i forgot the hurricane. hes number1!

To put a different spin on it rather than just going through the more obvious names - I would say Kevin Windham was a great 250 rider. My logic being that Kevin had/has exceptional throttle control and as a result could get more out of a 250 2 stroke in the slick stuff than most other riders. Since 4 strokes (not trying to turn this into a 4 vs 2 debate) hook up so well for everyone, I think his advantage here was somewhat diminished post thumper revolution.

Also Greg Albertyn deserves a mention for winning titles on both sides of the pond and "adapting" to Supercross relatively late in his career.

I didn't include Stewart because I don't think he had a big enough body of work on the 250 smoker before 4 strokes took over. Obviously he was capable of going as fast or faster than anyone on this list. My list also favors outdoors over SX.

I'll have to agree. You could see Joel Roberts riding skills in a still photo.

Man, I thought RJ until I saw McGrath. That dude literally mastered SX on a 250.

250 two stroke: Carmichael

250 four stroke: Villopoto

I've never seen him ride in person, but it's gotta be Robert by a mile. The stories are now legendary of how he never practiced, never trained and would be out all night before a race partying and chasing skirts, and would literally stagger to the starting gate drunk or hung over, and proceed to leave the best riders in the world in his dust...easily.

Rick Johnson was the best rider in the world from 86' up initial he got hurt in 89'. It didn't matter if it was SX or outdoors, 250cc or 500cc. If he didn't get landed on by Danny Storbeck he would have won a lot more races and titles. Jeff Stanton's career certainly wouldn't have played out the same.

agreed to a point. he schooled rc at washougal on a 2 strk. but he was the first top guy other then henry to embrace the 4 stroke. hes been riding a cr450 indoors and out since 03. he would have been amazing on a 500.

Carmichael is the 250 two-stroke poster boy. He held out longer than any of the top guys on the two-strokes, and went 24-0 on a 250 against 450s.

Joel Robert, ashing his cigarette on his competitors bar pad....

I thought I was hearing that the Joel Roberts aura was all pretense to make other riders feel like shit?
