What is the best 125cc dirt bike to buy out there? I'm talking a race bike none of this pit bike crap. I know Yamaha's are good they have been building them forever now. I welcome all suggestions. Thanks Smile

That would be nice it was for only me! I seen one a girl was riding at a track an it looked an sounded sick. This is for my son who is 12 yrs an on an 85 right now but will need a 125 soon! Plus I can ride it in the mean time. Wink 125's are fun to rip on.

If you want THE best 125, that would be the TM. All the others are good though.

Buy European and reward the manufacturers who are still developing the 2t breed.

If you can find one the 2011 Husky CR150 is suppose to be really good. I have a 2002 Husky 125 and
really like it. Parts are easy to come by and the reliability is top notch.

I dont think there's really a bad one anymore. Yamaha, TM, Husky, KTM, depends on your budget and preferences.

I'd like to stay around $2,500 or I have a 2003 CRF 450 with a stroker kit in it I'd be willing to trade. It will be my 12 year old sons first 125 an he might not be big enough to ride it till next year.

Any used 125 from 2000 on up would be good for him. Depending on how clean it is any 125 from 96 on up. Well, if you're going that far back, any clean 125 from 91 on up. For a new bike, the KTM 150SX would take my vote, even though Husky and TM make one too.

KTM150SX, most fun bike on the planet. But that new Husqvarna 150 looks soooooo good that I may need one for myself. TM? Maybe it's just me but I still do not like the feel of aluminum framed bikes. Never ridden one of the alum. framed YZ 2 strokes, how would any of you that have compare it to the twin spar style frames of Honda??

2006 or newer YZ125. Hands down. He's not going to go for the 150 since his kid is going to ride it in the 125 class, correct?

I'd look for a late model RM125.

I just got an '11 ktm 150sx... it's really good. Race gas, set the sag, little jetting and she rips. I had an 07 yz 125 with pro circuit porting, pipe/silencer and ignition... The stock ktm is as good, maybe a little faster. Suspension is good, brakes are awesome, hydralic clutch is sick. It's probably faster than a 250f in a straight line, but definitely harder to keep on the pipe when you're on the track. Good bike... Feels like a mountain bike with screamer motor.

Yes a 125 would be perfered since he wil eventually race it in the 125 class when I think he's ready to make the move up to the next bike. Since he's only on an 85 right now. Thanks for all the responses everyone Smile

I think the shape of the aluminum frame is the key. The YZ125 had a lot of power with alum and steel, while the Honda lost a lot of power in 98 (125) when it transitioned to the permiter alum frame.

For the $2000 budget?
Seconded on a clean, used RM125. They are on CL by the dozens.. find a clean one for $1200-1300, buy some new tires, a pipe, and maybe revalve the suspension.

If buying a new 125/150?
Have to go with the Husqvarna, TM or KTM.

The cleanest used KTM 150 that you can squeeze into your budget.

Used KTM 125sx will rip. I would go for an 07 and up. You can find deals on ebay/craigslist

the yz125 was the class of the field back when there were 125 shootouts...

and since then, they havent developed it at all. meanwhile tm, husky, and ktm have continued updating their bikes...

...my question is this, since all i ever hear about the euro bikes is that they are crap, how long is it going to take, or have they already gotten there, to catch up to and pass the yz125?

I had an 05 yz125 and now have an 03 cr125 (gave the yz to my son). the honda handles way better imo, esp turning.

I picked up a 06 cr 125 with low hours for $1300 off of CL a few weeks ago for me to play on and for my son to learn on. Had it out a few times and really impressed with the power. It had a pipe, silencer and v force reed cage on it and really runs strong. I was surprised at all the deals on CL, its a good time to buy a used bike cheap.

Exactly who is the 'everbody' who say that European bikes are crap?

The make with the largest share of the grid at pretty much every (amature) race I attend here in the U.K., is KTM. These are the racers who pay for their own bikes.

This is my 2005 RM125. My best advice would be to find one used (2005 - 2007) that's in MINT condition for around $2k, which is what I did. It happened to be a 2005 Suzuki that I found in incredible condition on CL...literally only ridden twice and not ridden hard at all. Then, do your homework on the model year and brand that you've found in MINT condition to see how it stacked up for that particular year against the competition (I didn't want to own the dog for that particular model year). Then = squeeze the trigger and start mixing bean oil.

if you are going to quote me, please get it right.

all i personally hear about the off-brand euro bikes is that they are serious crap. maybe i should have clarified that ktm is no longer part of that group. imo, ktm's quality is second to none but thats just my opinion.

but for the tm's, gas gas', and huskys of the world, i dont hear very good things about them. so im wondering when they will catch up to the yz......theyve had half a decade to get there.

and as for "who" i get my opinions on these bikes from......unfortunately/fortunately i know less amateurs than pro's in this sport. so who do you think im asking the opinion of?

I think, you ask people who not only don't buy bikes but also don't ride anything but 'modded' stuff. But hey, your the expert.

(with you on the KTM quality thing. Only bettered by the quality of the last 8 TM's I've bought).
