I've been through a couple helmets for my son and cannot seem to get a proper fitted helmet. He measures 20 Inch circumference. We tried a couple different 6D sizes and a Bell Moto 9 MIPS youth helmet. The 6d does not fit his head at all. He has a round head. The Bell seems to fit better but the cheek pads are very tight on his face. I contacted bell to see if they make thinner pads but the 50mm pad is the thinnest for that particular helmet. They recommended an adult extra small, I'm concerned about the shell size and weight of the adult and wondering if any of the other cheek pads from the bell models would fit the Youth Moto 9. The adult cheek pads are magnetic but the youth are snap ins. The full 9 fusion cheek pads offer multiple sizes and look like the exact same pad. Any help? I called bell directly but not to confident in their response.

I can't help with Bell but I went through the same thing this year with Fox helmets when my son moved onto a 65. His helmet at the time was a mid level YL and fit well but I got the high end with MIPS and Fluid Inside pads. YL fit too tight especially in the cheek area. I exchanged it for adult XS and it fit fine with no real noticable size or weight difference.

I guess that's what I will try next, I'll get the adult xs and compare the two. Thanks.

I have just gone through the same thing with my Son, 9 about to turn 10 in a couple of months.

He was in a 6D Medium Youth, great helmets, but on the heavier side, he now needs a Adult XS, so a little more weight again.

Ended up going with the Fly Formula, Carbon. Still great protection, but a lot lighter, especially when racing 1-2 Hour Cross Country races.

FLY have either 3-4 Shell sizes, then padding differences. Pretty sure the XS and Small are the same shell, just the XS has thicker padding.

My twin 10 year olds tried all the Bell kids sizes and the only thing that fit were Bell Moto 9 adult smalls. Don't think you have to stay with a kid size at that age.

ive heard of people mixing and matching the inner padding from different sizes to get the proper fit, and it was a legitimate path that the manufacturer offered to help with fitting, would be a good question to ask if you can call

A lot of people do this. For my son I bought him the next size bigger helmet (same shell size, just different pads) then bought him the tighter fitting pads. Depending on how long this helmet will fit, this will give him a little room to grow into a $649 helmet.

Sorry, been a busy week and just seeing this. I know you already ordered a product from a competing brand but wanted to jump in for anyone else in the same spot. The Formula's Youth helmet comes in a Youth Large shell and we offer YM and YS liner and cheek pads to size down. So, yes, the Youth helmet is a unique shell for children and has separate accessories to custom fit through that range.
