40 year old, formerly fast intermediate / expert, wanting a 2009 450 for mostly practice. Limited four stroke experience, will race occasionally... probabley most imporatant is reliability, suspension, and price.

What do you say?

Height? Weight?

best supension, reliability and best prices are on 09YZ450´s hands down. got mine for 4700 OTD in september and now i imagine they are cheaper yet..

dont screw with me, i am old and feeling grumpy..

If you can find an 08 CRF on the floor, those are pretty good bikes. Being a couple years old now, the price should be right. If I was walking in buying new today. YZ450 would be top of choice. Then between Honda and KTM. Probably siding with the KTM.

The 09's are going for about $4500-$5000 now. As far as which bike is the best, they are all pretty close. The big thing is EFI. The Kawi, which I have, came out with EFI last year on the 450 and it was a huge hit. Everyone loves it. It's simple, you don't have to mess with jetting anymore and throttle responce is better.

6ft, 210 lbs... riding in the nw.

grew up racing 2 stroke Yami's back in the day. Really only open to buying a Yamaha, Honda or Kawi. I know I don't need the newest bike, but it is that old racer in me that wants the latest and greatest...even though not warranted.

Go for the KTM for a tall rider no mods needed and are awesome bike won't let you down

Seriously, you will be happy with any bike, theyre all good

a YZ250 is the bike for you.

|

1/7/2010 11:28 AM

I would highly recomend the KX450F. ROCK SOLID Bike. The 2010 YZ450F looks like its going to be the bike to have in the future, but being such a new bike with EVERYTHING on it brand new, it's a little unproven. The Kawasaki is refined now and its an amazing bike. Get a 2010 KX450F and you will be happy. WICKED engine.

I sold my sons 2009 KX250F and got a 2010 KX250F and the refinments are worth the upgrade. The Engine just barks, and the suspension upgrade was noticable.

Stay away from the Honda what ever you do.....

If your set on a new 09, get the YZ450. You can find dealer practically giving them away. I would say look for an 09 CRF450, but a 2 of my diehard Honda freinds never really liked thiers. Both have sold thiers. 1 has an almost new 07 CRF450 and the other is shopping around for the right 06-08 CRf450.

and you'll never have to write one of these -

ASK THE MXPERTS:

Dear MXA, I live in mortal fear of my CRF450 blowing up. I came from a two-stroke background and never gave a second thought to the health of my engine, but now I have an hour meter and listen to every creak and groan. I have 40 hours on my CRF450. When should I rebuild it?

Assuming that the compression is good, there are no strange noises and the bikes starts easily, we don't think that 40 hours is long enough to worry about. As a rule of thumb you should check the valve clearance at closer and closer intervals as the bikes get older. Any change in valve clearance is a sign of danger. In the next 40 hours you will need to change the cam chain and piston, but 80 hours is a good ballpark for a well cared for four-stroke. All that said, we've blown up engines in 22 minutes.

The new overstock 08 CRF450's are the best bang for the buck right now. It's still a better bike than all than all the 09's.

Ummmm ....

The good -

This is a great motocross engine. Did we say great? We mean fabulous! It is strong off the bottom without being jerky. It is usable in the middle with a strong, broad and steady pull. While it isn't awesome over the top, it is better than the other three fuel-injected bikes in its class. The 2010 KX450F makes competitive power to 9000 rpm. It makes the most peak horsepower of any Japanese 450 and has the best low-to-mid power of any 2010 450.

And the bad -

The KX450F's defining feature is that it is the 20th Century Unlimited of motocross bikes, a big runaway train of a bike. It is tall, long and wide. It wants to turn, but hesitates in the center of corners and twitches momentarily. Riders get the sensation that the bike wants to stand up at the apex. This is not comforting. The front tries to turn, but the rear wheel won't follow.

They don't appear to have found a solution for the handling issues.

For gods sake don't tell the poor guy to buy one of those dreadful 09 crf's! Those things suck and I love and rode CRF's for 3 years prior. If you're buying an 09 I suggest RMZ. The YZF is slow and handles adequete at best. KXF has a great motor but suspension is ok and it stands up in the corners.

KTM has had a real good bike this year and pretty good last year.

If you really think you need the four stroke then the 08 Honda was the best bike. If you can find one buy it. That being said, for your size you will be very very happy with a pumpkin. If you dont absolutely have to have a four stroke buy the Yamaha or KTM smoker. If you are worrried about power buy a KTM250SX and put the 300 top end on it. Or send your YZ250 to the guys at max power and they will hook you up with the 285 kit that will blow your mind. Options options and more options. Happy shoping.

That's what I did. I sent the top end of my 06' YZ250 to Kris Ray at Powerseal and let him do his magic on it. Superb craftsmanship and they turned it into a brute. I asked for a stock-like powerspread and I got exactly what I asked for. It's just like a stock YZ with 10-15% more everywhere.

My cheater motor aint scared of no 450

With that said.... If you're hell bent on a Japanese 450 then I'd get the YZF. Killer suspension, plenty fast and stone reliable. I'd personally buy a Husky TC450, but I'm a Husky nut and dont care about being made fun of at the track.
